1950-2012

Harry Lott Jr., 62, of La Vernia, Texas, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012. He was born Feb. 25, 1950, the son of Cornelia (Rotramel) and Harry Lott Sr.

A 1968 graduate of MacArthur High School in San Antonio, Harry wore No. 71 and played tackle for the Brahma Bulls. At 210 pounds, he was nicknamed “Fat Harry” only if you were on his side of the ball. Harry also loved cars, rebuilding his beloved Chevy SS -- that was the terror north of the tracks.

As a young boy, he was found to spend hours on end playing with plastic yellow trucks and tractors, moving mounds of dirt with some hidden grand plan. It is no coincidence that as an adult, Harry went to work for construction equipment behemoth Waukesha Pearce as a mechanic and shop foreman, repairing heavy equipment land movers and giant generators for Brackenridge Hospital. He quickly moved into a supervisory position where he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone. The mounds of dirt from his childhood were about to get bigger -- much bigger.

From his humble, yet beautiful, ranch in La Vernia, Harry launched his own business, purchasing Caterpillar bulldozers and graders to service the many ranchers in the area who needed his expertise to build tanks, clear land, and rough in roads. His occupation was officially called “soil conservationist contractor.” That must have made him laugh till his sides split.

Those for whom Harry worked knew his word was his bond and that his handshake was more reliable than any contract ever written. One of his more unusual jobs began when he was contracted to clear and build the sub base for what would become a private jet airstrip for a notable Mexican businessman, sacrificing time with his family while living in a trailer the majority of many months on end. In the end, Harry became a bigger-than-life version of that young kid who loved to play in the dirt -- his trucks were just a little bigger now. Life behind a desk was never on the radar screen. Harry’s work ethic should be a valuable lesson for children and teenagers entering the work force of tomorrow. That’s a class worth taking.

Harry became a trailblazer in the world of rescued animals. His and his wife Robin’s ranch was a veritable Texas zoo with dozens of dogs which had been abandoned. The dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, cattle, and varmints became kin.

He wasn’t just a big man, physically. Harry possessed a wicked wit that would drop out of the blue with a variety of accents to punctuate his stories. His most important accomplishment was his success as a husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend to all he loved. He did these things in a quiet, easy-going manner that is at the very foundation of true character without need of recognition. Those who knew him will awake on the occasional morning chuckling with a smile on their face remembering times gone by on hot Texas nights under starry skies.

Harry was preceded in death by parents.

He is survived by his bride of 36 years, Robin “Berta Faye” (McDaniel) Lott; his children, Sarah Elizabeth Lott and Zachary Brian Lott; his sister, Katheryn Lott; his nephew, John Rocco Bernardoni; and other numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, family, friends, and his pets, especially Dixie and Bella.

Visitation was held Friday, March 30, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service was held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in La Vernia, with the Rev. David L. Gale officiating.

Interment followed in the Concrete Cemetery near La Vernia.

Memorial contributions may be made to: The La Vernia Christian Food Pantry, c/o LV First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 279, La Vernia, TX 78121; the Warm Worthwhile Animal Rescue Mission, c/o CPS/IBEW F.C.U., 1002 Camden St., San Antonio, TX 78215; or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org/tribute.
