Churches plan services for Holy Week, Easter

A number of special worship services and activities are planned at area churches this year for Easter Sunday, April 8, and the days preceding it. The Wilson County News publishes this compilation of Easter services each year as a service to our readers. Addresses for churches are available online in the free church directory at http://wilsoncountynews.com. Services are on Easter if not otherwise noted.
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 830-745-2633, will hold Mass at 8 p.m. Thursday in Commemoration of the Lord’s Last Supper. On Good Friday, Stations of the Cross will be at 4:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 5.
An Easter Vigil service and Mass will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. On Easter, a procession with the Blessed Sacrament around the church will be at 10 a.m. followed by Mass, with an Easter egg hunt after the service.
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 210-635-8539, will have a Holy Thursday Mass and a Good Friday service, both at 7 p.m. An Easter Vigil Mass will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 8 and 11:30 a.m. An Easter egg hunt will follow early Mass at 9 a.m.
Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 830-254-3539, will hold a Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper Adoration from 6:30-10 p.m. On Friday, Divine Mercy is at 4:15, Stations of the Cross will be at 4:30 p.m., and a celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 5 p.m.
On Saturday, an Easter Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 7 and 9:30 a.m. An Easter egg hunt will take place after the later Mass in the churchyard.
The Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 830-393-7032, Easter Sunday worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday school begins at 10.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 830-393-6117, will have a Mass of the Lord’s Supper with Adoration of the Eucharist, Thursday at 7 p.m. until midnight. On Good Friday, Stations of the Cross will be at 10 a.m. in the Floresville Nursing Center and Regency Manor. Stations of the Cross in the church will be at 12 p.m. Good Friday services with reading of Passion, Veneration of Cross and Communion will be at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at 8 a.m. will be a prayer service for all receiving sacraments at the Easter Vigil and in Easter time. At 10 a.m. at Pecan Park is the Knights of Columbus Easter egg hunt. An Easter Vigil will be Saturday at 7 p.m.
On Easter, Mass will be at the regular times of 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and noon.
The Floresville United Methodist Church, 830-393-2425, will hold a joint Maundy Thursday service at El Mesias at 7 p.m. A Good Friday service will be held at 7 p.m. On Saturday, there will be a 6 p.m. praise service. Resurrection Sunday services will be at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m.
The First Lutheran Church, 830-393-2747, will hold a service on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, both at 7 p.m.
Easter will start with a 7 a.m. sunrise service. A full breakfast will follow, with an Easter egg hunt after breakfast. Late service will be at 10:30 a.m.
The First Baptist Church, 830-216-4946, will have Easter worship services at 8:30 a.m. and at 11 a.m. The late service will have special performances by the children’s choir and adult choir.
There will be no evening service.
The Oak Hills Community Church, 830-216-2273, will offer a community-wide Easter egg hunt at Pecan Park in Floresville, Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Easter Sunday services are at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Bible Study will be at 9:15 a.m.
The Floresville Church of Christ, 830-393-6154, Easter service will be at 10 a.m. and Bible study at 9 a.m.
St. Boniface Catholic Church, 830-780-3559, will have a 5 p.m. Mass of the Lord’s Supper Adoration Thursday until 9 p.m. On Friday, Stations of the Cross will be at 2:30 p.m., with a celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3 p.m. On Saturday, a Vigil will be at 8:30 p.m. Easter Mass will be at 8 a.m. An Easter egg hunt will follow.
The Cowboy Fellowship, 830-769-3733, between Pleasanton and Jourdanton, will have an Easter egg hunt on Good Friday, 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Jourdanton City Park, free for the community with lots of eggs and candy. Easter service is Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 830-780-3947, will hold a Mass Thursday at 6 p.m. On Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will be at 2:30 p.m., with a Communion service at 3 p.m.
On Holy Saturday, an Easter Vigil will be at 8 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. at St. Cornelius and at 8:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth in Fashing. There will be an Easter egg hunt following 10:30 Mass.
St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 830-745-2541, will have a Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper at 6:30 p.m. On Good Friday, Stations of the Cross will be at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Lord’s Passion service at 3 p.m. Saturday Easter Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 8 a.m.
The La Vernia Ministerial Alliance, 830-253-8905, will sponsor “The Community of La Vernia Carries the Cross” on Good Friday, starting at 10 a.m. in the La Vernia City Park gazebo. Ministers will pause at various stops for brief reflections, prayers, and singing. Those participating should take canned or nonperishable food items in plastic sacks for the La Vernia Food Pantry.
The Cowboy Fellowship of Wilson County, 830-305-5453, will offer an Easter Sunday service at 7:30 a.m. followed by breakfast and an Easter egg hunt.
The La Vernia United Methodist Church, 830-779-2621, will offer a sunrise Easter service at 7 a.m., followed by services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Breakfast tacos will be served in between services.
The First Baptist Church of La Vernia, 830-253-1239, will have a blended worship service at 8:10 a.m. and a contemporary service at 10:45 a.m. on Easter Sunday. Both services will feature a special choir presentation. Breakfast tacos will be served after the early service with Sunday School at 9:35. An Easter egg hunt will follow the 10:45 service. There will be no evening service.
The Immanuel Lutheran Church, 830-253-8121, will have a Holy Thursday and Good Friday service, both at 7 p.m. An Easter sunrise service will be at 7 a.m. Easter breakfast will be served from 7:45-9 a.m. followed by an egg hunt at 9:15 a.m. A Resurrection service with Holy Communion will be at 10 a.m.
St. Ann Catholic Church, 830-779-3131, will have a Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday at 7 p.m. On Good Friday, a Cross Walk in the City Park will be at 10 a.m. Stations of the Cross will be at 6 p.m. A bilingual service will be held at 7 p.m. A Vigil Mass will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday Mass will be at 9:30 a.m., noon in Spanish, and 5:30 p.m.
The Grace Bible Church, 830-779-5200, will have a Good Friday service at 6:30 p.m. and Easter Sunday services at 9 and 10:30 a.m.
The La Vernia Christian Teaching Center, 830-779-6361, will have an Easter praise and worship service at 10 a.m., there will be no evening service.
The Marcelina Baptist Church, 830-393-2862, will have Easter Sunday sunrise service under the oak trees beside the church at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast in the Fellowship Hall will follow. Sunday school will be taught at 9:45 a.m. A traditional Easter sermon in the church sanctuary will be held at 11 a.m.
The Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 830-484-3302, will have a Holy Thursday service at 7 p.m. On Friday, Stations of the Cross and readings will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Easter Vigil Mass is at 8 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. with a Children’s Mass at 11 a.m.
St. John Lutheran Church, 830-484-3369, will hold services Maundy Thursday with Communion and on Good Friday at 7 p.m. A Son Rise Easter service will be held at 7 a.m. with breakfast afterward. A celebration service will be held at 8:30 a.m. with an Easter egg hunt following.
The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 210-667-1232, will have a 7 p.m. Mass Thursday. Stations of the Cross and a liturgy will be at 3 p.m. Friday, along with a Liturgy of the Word at 7 p.m. Saturday, Easter Vigil Mass is at 6 p.m. On Sunday, a 7 a.m. sunrise procession and Mass will be held. Mass will also be held at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. with an egg hunt in between.
The Resurrection United Methodist Church, 210-649-2636, will celebrate with a traditional Seider meal on Holy Thursday jointly at ET Dixon church. Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. on Good Friday will include a joint choir special at Resurrection UMC. On Sunday, sunrise service will be held at 6:30 a.m. at the shore of the lake, followed by a community breakfast. A children’s Easter egg hunt will be held at 10 a.m., with worship at 11 a.m. Sunday.
The Stockdale Ministerial Alliance will hold a community-wide sunrise service at the Stockdale Cemetery at 7 a.m. Breakfast will be served at Christ United Methodist Church after service; if it rains the service will be in the church.
The Christ United Methodist Church, 830-996-3007, will have a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. Good Friday service will be at 7 p.m. Breakfast will be offered Sunday in the church following the community-wide sunrise service at 7 a.m. A 10 a.m. service will follow.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 830-996-3415, will have a Lord’s Supper Mass at 7 p.m. Thursday. A Passion service on Good Friday will be held at 2 p.m. The Saturday Easter Vigil Mass will be at 8:30 p.m. On Easter, Mass will be at 6, 8, and 10 a.m.
The First Baptist Church, 830-996-3456, will have worship services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m.
The First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, 830-947-3333, will have a sunrise service at 7 a.m., followed by a pancake breakfast, Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., and morning worship at 11 a.m.
