Brahmas corral Mustangs in extra innings, blank Cole Cougars in six
NIXON -- The Stockdale Brahma varsity baseball team got a huge district win last Tuesday night against the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs.
The Mustangs (2-10-1, 1-2) got out to an early 3-0 lead until the Brahmas’ Cody Hastings had a double in the top of the sixth inning to score a run. The Brahmas rallied in the top of the seventh inning by scoring 4 runs to make the score 5-3. Then, it was Nixon’s turn to rally.
Led by Jamie Moreno with a big two-out double, the Mustangs pulled to within 1 run, and then got Moreno to score the tying run on a passed ball. This sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, and with the bases loaded, Miguel Marquez of Stockdale stepped to the plate and delivered a big hit to score the go-ahead run. The next batter was senior Colton West, and with one swing of the bat, he put the game out of reach for the Mustangs by hitting a monstrous grand slam to make the score 10-5 in favor of the Brahmas.
This heroic effort was West’s third home run of the year, all of which have been grand slams. Starting pitcher Marquez (4-0) finished the game off in the bottom of the eighth to improve the Brahmas’ record to 9-5 overall, and 1-1 in district.
With the big win over the Mustangs, the Brahmas turned their attention to the Cole Cougars, as the two teams met Friday night.
The Brahmas jumped out to an early 2-run lead in the top of the first inning, and added 7 more runs in the top of the third. After sending a 10th run across the plate in the top of the sixth inning, the Cougars were left with just one at-bat to score or have the game called early. The Brahmas got the job done, and went home a little early with a 10-0 win.
Tristan Marquez tallied 7 more strikeouts and threw a complete-game shutout for the Brahmas, as Stockdale improved to 2-1 in district play, and 10-5 overall. West sparked the offense by going 3 for 4 from the plate and hitting his fourth home run of the year.
The Stockdale junior varsity team also earned a 10-0 win over Cole.
