Pirettes fall to Lady Bulldogs in struggle for district’s top spot
Pirette shortstop Heather Rocha gets the lead runner out at second base, and then makes the throw over to first base in time to get the double play.
POTH -- It was billed as the battle of the unbeatens, as the Marion and Poth softball teams put their perfect district records on the line last Tuesday evening in Poth. Each team was looking to maintain the district’s top spot, and in the end, it was Marion that pulled out the win by the final score of 8-4.
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Marion added a second run in the top of the third, and then blew the game open with a 3-run effort in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 5-0 game.
Poth thundered back in the bottom of the fourth to earn 3 runs of its own, but still trailed Marion by the score of 5-3.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to find offensive success in the top of the fifth inning, scoring 2 additional runs. The visiting team then tacked on another run in the top of the sixth, and led 8-3 going into the bottom of the inning.
Poth managed to scratch 1 additional run in the bottom of the sixth, and both teams were held from scoring in the seventh, giving the win and lead in the District 29-2A standings to the Lady Bulldogs.
Ryann Boening was charged with the loss while pitching for the Pirettes, but she led the team at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run, a double, a walk, and a stolen base. Kelsey Garcia, Lauren Pape, and Katy Macias also had hits for Poth, and Garcia and Pape each earned RBIs.
While the loss was a tough pill to swallow for the Pirettes and most Poth fans, Head Coach Carilee Robbins isn’t worrying over it too much.
“We will be all right,” she said. “We are young. We got a bit rattled, but hopefully they will learn from it.”
