The Seventh Buck Taylor South Central Texas Independent Cattlemen’s Association (SCTICA) Benefit Team Ropin’ is set for Saturday, April 28, at the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce Arena in Stockdale, featuring No. 8, 10, 12, and 14 ropings.

A different format is being used this year in hopes of drawing more ropers. It is also moved to April for a cooler day. If you recall, it has rained every year it was held in Stockdale in the past!

No. 8 books open at 10 a.m. with roping to begin at 11 a.m. Ropers may enter one, draw three; or enter open, draw four for $80. Belt buckles will be awarded.

Books open for the No. 10 and No. 12 at noon, with competition to begin at 1 p.m. Ropers may enter one, draw two; or enter open, draw three for $75. The No. 10 and No. 12 will run together with separate short rounds. Belt buckles will be awarded.

Books open for the No. 14 roping at 4 p.m. with roping set to begin at 5 p.m. There will be an 80-percent payback. This is a four-header for $125 per roper, limited to three entries. No buckles will be awarded for the No. 14.

The Independent Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) members put this roping on and invite everyone interested in roping or in supporting ICA to join us for a day of fun and fellowship. ICA stands for the smaller cattlemen as well as large ranchers and represents everyone equally.

The money raised by this day is used to represent cattlemen as well as rural issues throughout the year locally as well as in both Austin and Washington. A recent article in the Wilson County News showed ICA Executive Director Bill Hyman representing the cattlemen in Austin on water issues.

Texas is fortunate with the oil and gas interest in the area, but there are also concerns that go with this “boom” and ICA will work with our rural areas to help protect our values and the people who live here.

In this effort, community members as well as visitors, ropers, and the SCTICA members, come together for a focus on cattlemen’s and rural issues.

Refreshments will be available.

It is not known at press time if Buck Taylor, known for playing Newly in the Gunsmoke series and “Turkey Creek” Jack Johnson on “Tombstone,” will attend this year. Taylor has teamed with the SCTICA to have his team roping.
