The future leaders of tomorrow are learning and honing their animal-husbandry skills, and members of the La Vernia FFA and area 4-H clubs exhibited the results of their efforts March 1-3 in the 55th annual La Vernia Junior Livestock & Poultry Show. When the tallies were calculated, this year’s sale total, according to Sarah Young of the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce, realized $310,000 -- an increase of more than $60,000 over last year.

Kristen Klein and her steer entered the ring, competing against a field of 36 steers, to garner the grand champion title for the third time. Chesney Halsey’s entry earned reserve champion honors.

Both Kristen and Chesney earned top showmanship honors in the senior and junior divisions, respectively. They and all the showmanship winners were recognized prior to the auction March 3.

Leading the way among the 21 lamb entries was Bo Garcia, winning the grand champion honor for the second year in a row. Clayton Matney’s entry earned reserve champion.

Bo also joined the winners’ circle in the junior division for his showmanship, and Morgan Burns took top honors in the senior division.

Competition was fierce, with 103 market swine in the division. Brock Gerlich’s and Kayla Gladstone’s entries earned these young producers an appearance in the auction ring with the grand and reserve champions, respectively.

Shaley Trammell and Trace Venske led in swine showmanship in the senior and junior division, respectively. For this win, the duo each earned belt buckles.

Zachary Balcar’s pen of rabbits earned the grand champion title, while Tristan Summy took the reserve title.

Claire Weber repeated her rabbit showmanship honors, but this time in the senior division, while her sister, Emma Weber, took the junior division honors.

Feathers flew when 36 turkeys were entered, with Catrice James’ entry taking grand champion honors and Emily Ramzinski’s took reserve.

Dalton Schwarz took top position in the poultry contest out of 33 broilers entered. Samantha Kravitz earned reserve honors.

Valerie Swygard led the way once again in the goat competition, with her entry earning the top position from 28 goats entered. Valerie won the title last year, and continued her winning ways by taking the senior showmanship honors.

Colton Bennett’s goat entry earned reserve champion.

Earning the reserve showmanship honors in the goat division was Hunter Skrzycki. Other showmanship winners included Leighton Robbins, senior division in the heifer category, and Emma Kotzur earning the junior heifer division.

According to Young, all the grand and reserve champion exhibitors received $2,000 or more in the auction.

Baked foods, crafts show

The artistic skills of exhibitors also were showcased during the three-day event.

Carllie Allen’s La Vernia Monopoly-type game she created earned the overall grand champion craft honors. She entered in the junior miscellaneous division.

Logan Recker took reserve champion honors with his curio display case.

Best of show honors in the baked foods show went to Kaylin Bratz for an iced cake in the senior division; and Kait Steele earned top baker in the junior division with an un-iced cake. Both students received microwave ovens from Hoelscher’s Furniture in Floresville as part of their prize winnings.

The 38 items sold during the 2012 baked foods and crafts auction brought a total of $11,850.

Complete results will be published in a future edition of the La Vernia News.

Article compiled from data provided by Sarah Young with the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce.
