Kate Burns a semifinalist in 2012 search for Huggable Heroes program
Kate Burns, 11, of La Vernia has been named a semifinalist in the 2012 search for Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes. Kate is one of 80 young leaders being recognized for helping make their community and the world a better place.
Kate has raised funds and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) for the past six years. She has participated in walks to support diabetes research, and has raised $61,000 for JDRF. Kate has gone to numerous schools and companies to explain what it is like to live with diabetes, and how people can help. She has also met with congressmen and representatives on National Diabetes Day. Kate also has served as a JDRF Youth Ambassador and received the JDRF Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ultimately, 10 Huggable Heroes will be selected. Each will receive $10,000 -- a $7,500 educational scholarship and $2,500 from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation to be donated to the 501(c)(3) charity or Canadian cause of the Huggable Hero’s choice. In addition, the Huggable Heroes will receive a trip for themselves and one parent, or legal guardian, where they will be celebrated for their work, participate in a professional photo shoot, and take part in a community-service project.
Huggable Heroes are young leaders, ages 8 to 18, who demonstrate strong levels of kindness, compassion, and leadership to make a difference in their communities or around the world.
In May, 30 finalists will be announced, and the 10 Huggable Heroes will be named this summer.
