FHS advances to regional quarterfinal
The Floresville High School varsity Tiger soccer team celebrates its first-ever playoff appearance and victory following a 2-0 win over Victoria West April 3.
VICTORIA -- After an outstanding district season that qualified the Floresville Tiger soccer team for postseason play, the team has been on a tear. The Tigers played in their first-ever playoff game last Tuesday, and earned a 2-0 victory over Victoria West.
The Tigers scored their first goal of the game in the first half, and tacked on another in the second. The Warriors made seven shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net, as Floresville rolled to a 2-0 win.
The Tigers’ two goals were put on the board courtesy of Godswill Orzabal and Vicente Esparza. Heriberto Briones set both up with corner kicks, and every player on the field contributed to the win. Esteban Mireles made every play that came his way as the Floresville goalkeeper.
“Our experienced defense controlled a very fast offense of Victoria West, and held them scoreless the whole game,” said Tiger Head Coach Robert Trevino.
With the first-round win, the Tigers enjoyed the team’s first-ever playoff win, and soon made plans for a return trip to Victoria. The Tigers were paired up with Rockport-Fulton, and teams squared off on April 5.
The first goal of the game came in the first half, as Eli Sanchez showed the Pirates his speed, dribbling the ball out wide, and setting up a right cross to Jorge Campos. Campos headed the ball into the open net, and the Tigers celebrated a 1-0 lead.
In the second half of play, Rockport-Fulton tied the game with a goal of its own. The Tigers went back to work, though, and Sanchez set the team up for its second goal. Using his speed and working his way free to the right side of the field, Sanchez moved the ball in to Orzabal, who scored to give Floresville the 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
“Our hats go off to a well-coached Rockport-Fulton team,” Trevino said. “We fought a tough-willed team that gave us the most challenge so far in the playoffs.
“Again, our defense held the Pirates to only one score with so many shots on goal,” he added. “We were saved by our great skilled goalkeeper Esteban Mireles who stopped so many shots.”
The Pirates took 12 shots on goal, but Mireles allowed only the one goal.
The win advanced Floresville to the regional quarterfinals, where the Tigers were set to face the team from La Joya Juarez-Lincoln. The game was scheduled to be played Tuesday, April 10, in Corpus Christi.
