NIXON -- The youth of the Nixon-Smiley area shone as they exhibited everything from animals to crafts and ag mechanic projects to baked foods during the Nixon-Smiley Livestock Show and Sale March 9-10. Other activities included the Clover Kids Pee Wee Showmanship round and the announcement of the first hall of fame inductee. See “Hall of Fame” for more about this.

Individuals and the business sector came forward to again to support the area youth, by bidding on animals, baked goods, and crafts, with auction proceeds totaling almost $110,000.

Nixon’s own Erin Wheat-Aguirre, 2011-12 Old Chisholm Trail Drivers Queen, and Mascot Dillan Novak assisted with the presentation of trophies and awards during the event.

Clayton Boatright led the way by exhibiting the grand champion steer. Hailey Boatright took the reserve champion and showmanship honors in the steer competition.

Cason Trammell exhibited the grand market hog, while Conley Boatright repeated last year’s placing as reserve champion. Conley also earned the swine showmanship title.

Randi Lamza defended the reserve champion title in the market lamb division, with Natalie Trammell earning grand champion honors. Randi also took home the lamb showmanship honors. Natalie later returned to earn the grand champion commercial heifer contest.

Seth Wynne returned and placed one step higher in the goat competition than last year to win grand champion. Kaytlin Tschoepe’s entry earned reserve champion, while Hester Brooke took the showmanship honors.

In the market rabbit division, Amber Lakey’s and Meaghan Fonseca’s entries took grand and reserve champion, respectively. Chasadie Medina earned the showmanship title.

Another repeat winner was Abigail Scarbrough, who returned to the winners’ circle for exhibiting the grand champion turkey. Mikel Scarbrough earned reserve champion honors.

Seth Wynne’s and Jake Robinson’s broiler entries earned the grand and reserve champion spots, respectively. Devon Warzecha won showmanship honors. This made Seth’s second grand champion title.

No stock show would be complete without the ag mechanics, crafts, and baked foods shows.

Justin Wolf’s tool box earned him grand champion honors, while Matthew Krueger earned reserve champion honors with his work bench.

In the craft competition, Chase Neubauer was named the grand champion with a pie safe. William Hodge’s lamp with deer horns earned the reserve title.

In the baked-foods division, Riley Samford took grand champion in the layered cakes division with a carrot cake. Eric Scarbrough received reserve honors with his Chocolate Ganache entry.

The winners of the record book category both returned and placed higher this year. Last year’s reserve champion, Michael Shannon, earned grand champion status this year. Conley Boatright earned reserve, after placing fourth last year.

Clover Kids

For the fifth year, the Clover Kids participated in “Pee Wee Showmanship.” Kindergarten children from Nixon, Smiley, or Leesville are given an opportunity to dress up and show an animal.

Main Drug Co. of Nixon donated the trophies and rosettes given to all Clover Kids who participated.

According to Janna Wheat, director of the Nixon-Smiley show, the Clover Kids meet once a month and “do lots of arts and crafts activities and ‘field trips,’” she said. We had one visit a peanut field and dig up peanuts! Quite educational!”
