Letter: Oil production, jobs, prosperity ... coming with a price

Editor:

Everybody wants increased domestic oil production, jobs, and prosperity in South Texas. Development of the Eagle Ford shale can bring us these wonderful things. But I don’t think anyone wants new RV parks or fly-by-night limited-liability operators trucking fracking waste into old disposal wells or pits adjacent to our agricultural or residential property, not to mention dangerous and destructive truck traffic clogging the roads we take to school and work.

How are the property rights of community residents being protected if a new trailer park or disposal pit goes in next door? Aren’t farmers and ranchers dealing with enough challenges without facing this entirely preventable threat of water contamination? Do we have to pay this price? I don’t think we do.

Responsible oil companies can safely dispose of their waste, and facilities can be located in industrial rather than agricultural and residential areas. Workers should be housed near drilling operations. Profits being made are more than sufficient to pay for these sensible policies. Lots of people are profiting from the Eagle Ford shale, but if plans for waste-disposal facilities and new RV parks come to fruition, Wilson County residents will face property devaluation, truck traffic, noise, pollution, and possible groundwater contamination.

I work at Fort Sam Houston, and some of my co-workers have started buying houses in Wilson County because of the rural setting and easy commute. This trend won’t continue if the county chooses to accept unlimited industrial waste-disposal sites, new RV parks, and heavy truck traffic. Is that the future we want for this community, or would we rather preserve our agricultural heritage while encouraging more middle class housing development?

If you care about these choices, get informed, speak out, and hold your local elected leaders accountable. Recently a colleague looking to relocate admired our neighborhood, but I had to warn her Wilson County might not be the quiet, safe, and wholesome environment she and her husband are looking for to raise their three young children.
