Pirettes finish second in district softball
POTH -- They won’t win the district championship this year, but after another good season, the Poth Pirettes will advance into the softball playoffs. With one game remaining in their District 29-2A schedule, the Pirettes have a strong foothold on the No. 2 spot, right behind Marion.
Poth began last week with a 20-5 win over Luling. The visiting Lady Eagles started things off with 2 runs in the top of the first inning, but the Pirettes immediately responded with a 10-run effort of their own. Luling tacked on 2 runs in the top of the second inning, but Poth answered with 2 more of its own to make it a 12-4 affair.
Luling was shut out in the third, while Poth added 3 additional runs. The Eagles scored their final run in the top of the fourth, but the Pirettes drove in 5 more Poth runs, ending the game with a 20-5 win.
The Pirettes traveled to Marion April 13, and needed a win to get a share of the district crown. The Lady Bulldogs won the first meeting in Poth, and the Pirettes were looking to even the score. Unfortunately, the Pirettes came up short, and will finish second in the standings.
Poth scored first with 3 runs in the top of the second inning, but Marion came back with 6 runs of its own. The Lady Bulldogs tacked on 2 more in the bottom of the fourth inning, and 3 in the sixth to take an 11-3 lead into the seventh. The Pirettes scratched 1 run in the seventh, but couldn’t get much going, and fell to Marion by the score of 11-4.
Poth’s record stands at 10-10 following the game, and the team is 7-2 in district play. The Pirettes were set to close out the regular season April 17 against Nixon-Smiley, and will then prepare for the playoffs.
