Republicans hold Wilson County convention
Wilson County Young Republicans Elizabeth and Titus Shanks get firsthand experience in local civics-in-action at the April 21 Republican Party County Convention.
The Wilson County Republican Party held its 2012 County Convention on April 21 in the La Vernia High School cafeteria.
The purposes of the convention are to choose delegates and alternates to the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) State Convention, currently scheduled for June 7-9 in Fort Worth, and to consider resolutions or statements on policy issues to send to the state convention for eventual inclusion in the state and national party platform. Fifty-five grass-roots participants attended the county convention and 22 delegates were chosen to send to the state convention.
Wilson County Judge Marvin Quinney opened the convention with a prayer and pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags. The first order of business was to elect convention officers. Elected were Ruby Manen, chairman; Venise Grantham, secretary; Daynah Fallwell, parliamentarian; and Peter Juhasz, sergeant at arms. Chairmanships went to Carter Thomas, resolutions chair, and Nelda Hoefelmeyer, nominations chair.
In addition to Quinney, elected officials in attendance included Wilson County Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Dickie Jackson, Wilson County Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Jim Burdette, Wilson County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sara Canady, and Poth Mayor Travis Pruski.
Local candidates present were Republican candidate for county sheriff Chris Burchell; county attorney candidate Daynah Fallwell; and candidates for Pct. 3 county commissioner Ricky Morales, Larry Bratton, Kip Workman, and Randall Richter.
The Texas state Primary election will be held Tuesday, May 29; early voting will be held May 14-25 at La Vernia City Hall. The last day to register to vote in the Texas Primary election is Monday, April 30.
The Wilson County Republican Headquarters will re-open on Tuesday, May 1. It is located on U.S. 87 in La Vernia, across from Koepp Chevrolet. New voting precincts and voting locations can be found at http://www.co.wilson.tx.us/ips/cms/othercountyoffices/esd_locations_2011.html.
