The Floresville varsity tennis team finished its regular season at the District Tennis Tournament in Victoria April 4-5. The team prepared all season long for the district tournament by attending tough tennis tournaments that guaranteed four matches and often competed against other prominent tennis schools.

At the district tournament, the Jaguars and Tigers faced competition from Gregory-Portland, Victoria West, and Beeville. However, at the tournament’s end, Floresville was able to place in four out of the five tennis divisions played at district.

In mixed doubles, the junior team of Matthew Hoelscher/Madison Pollok defeated Victoria West’s Keller/Najman 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 in the final and were district champions. After a close first-set win, Hoelscher/Pollok lost the second set but regrouped and found their form in the third set that had led them to three first-place wins in the regular season.

In boys doubles, the junior team of Sean Reinertson/James Wayne made its way to the finals where they faced Gregory-Portland’s Katz/Davidson. After a long-fought battle, Floresville lost 6-0, 6-4 and were district finalists.

In girls singles, senior Brittany Aikens was seeded first at the tournament, advanced to the finals, and defeated Beeville’s Cori Moore 6-3, 6-3 to become district champion. Aikens was previously the district’s girls singles finalist last year.

Finally, in boys singles, sophomore Enrique Garcia placed third by defeating Port Lavaca Calhoun’s Christian Tuazon 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8).

Other members of the team who competed in the district tournament included the juniors mixed doubles team of Sheldon Snyder/Shelby Carpenter, who lost to Beeville’s Reyna/Barris 7-5, 6-1.

Boys singles sophomore Julian Gonzales won his first-round match against Victoria East’s Collin Janecka 6-1, 6-1 but lost to Beeville’s Eric Dehnert 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

The senior/junior duo of Blake LaRue/Giordi Carrillo defeated Port Lavaca Calhoun’s Yeh/Yeh 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3 in the first round and Beeville’s Lucio/Barrera 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, but lost to Gregory-Portland’s Katz/Davidson 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals, and to Gregory-Portland’s Deaton/Havelka 6-3, 6-3 in the tournament’s playback match.

Girls singles freshman Kaia Carrillo defeated Port Lavaca Calhoun’s Missy Gonzalez 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, but lost to Beeville’s Cori Moore 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

In girls doubles, the senior/junior teams of Roseann Palmer/Alexandria Butts and Angelica Gonzales/Ambar Villarreal suffered losses to Calhoun’s Kawana/Castillo 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(4) and Gregory-Portland’s Knesek/Macha 6-2, 6-0, respectively.

The Floresville teams of Matthew Hoelscher/Madison Pollok and Sean Reinertson/James Wayne, and Brittany Aikens advanced to regional competition April 17-18 at Blossom Athletic Center at San Antonio.
