Poth Girl Scouts earn Bronze Award

The junior members of the Poth Girl Scouts Troop 2532 earn their Bronze Award inspired by “100 good turns for 100 years of Scouting.” The Girl Scout juniors finished those 100 hours April 14-15, when they painted 20 picnic tables at Poth’s city park.
Each junior is required to complete at least 15 hours toward their Bronze Award, but these five girls averaged 20. The group includes Catherine Henke, Rebecca Moreno, Courtney Krueger, Sarah Theuret, and Braelyn Weaks.
“The girls spent seven and a half hours painting tables this weekend [April 14-15] and had a great time,” Leader Lisa Theuret said. “They knew this was the last service project to earn their award, so we talked about the ceremony and how proud we were of them.”
Overall, the troop has participated in 14 service projects. Over spring break, they helped with bingo and served lunch at Veterans Day Out. The troop periodically weeds a flower garden in front of Poth High School, which they planted last year. They also participated in Operation Cookie Drop, which collects cookies for the USO.
In December, the girls participated in an opening ceremony for La Vernia’s annual tree lighting and made recycled ornaments for their community Christmas forest. The troop also volunteered at Poth’s Christmas celebration on the Plaza, handing out candy canes for Santa, and supervising children who were playing on bouncy castles.
Earlier in the fall, the troop conducted the flag ceremony for Poth Elementary School’s Veterans Day ceremony. They also led a religious service at Camp La Jita’s Green Chapel as part of a Wilson County service unit campout. The Scouts helped run a Goober Games booth at Peanut Festival and made the 100th anniversary trefoils that decorated the parade float.
The juniors volunteered at a membership rally in La Vernia, helping with minute-to-win-it games and talking to girls and parents about Scouting. They also participated in a school supplies drive and hosted a Badge Day that was open to the public, conducting the flag ceremony for that event.
“These girls have averaged three hours of service a week since school started,” Theuret said. “That’s quite an accomplishment for fourth- and fifth-graders. The goal of the Bronze Award is to ‘Take Action,’ and they certainly did. I am very proud of them.”
Troop 2532 would like to thank Mayor Travis Pruski, the city of Poth, and Rose Huizar for the painting supplies and support moving the picnic tables, and Poth High School Principal Frank Hosek for his continued sponsorship of the troop.
