Two women die in Karnes County wreck
CHOATE -- Two are dead and two have been hospitalized following an April 25 wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car near the intersection of S.H. 239 and C.R. 128 west of here.
Killed in the crash were Carol Harris, 69, of Tulsita and Margaret Hensley, 59, of Karnes City. The two were back-seat passengers of a Toyota Avalon being driven by 65-year-old Gary Deskin of Karnes City. He and his front-seat passenger, Harris’ 72-year-old husband John, were flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio. A hospital spokesman said April 30 that Deskin has been treated and released, while John Harris was listed in “critical, but stable” condition.
According to Trooper Scott Jendrzey of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a tractor-trailer hauling a load of seed rear-ended the Toyota Avalon, which was stopped in the roadway due to road construction. The crash occurred right in front of a flagman who was directing traffic through the area.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Dan Tucker, 59, of Runge, was not injured. Charges against him are pending, Jendrzey said.
Deskin, a longtime Karnes County resident, is a candidate for Karnes County Pct. 1 commissioner.
