Dealership, bus barn to trade places

FLORESVILLE -- What does the Floresville Independent School District’s (ISD) bus barn on Standish Street between Fifth and Sixth streets have in common with Richardson Bros. Chevrolet Polaris on U.S. 181? Both facilities are no longer large enough to accommodate their current usage.
This is why the Floresville ISD board, at its April 17 board meeting, approved a deal in which the district and the dealership would trade pieces of land in a non-cash transaction. Deputy Superintendent Ken Barber said after the meeting that the district will give Richardson Bros. two parcels of land located north of Floresville on U.S. 181. He said the properties are located approximately a half mile past Dittmar Lumber. This, Barber said, will be the site of the dealership’s new location.
Steve Richardson of Richardson Bros. said the deal is not complete, as it is pending the approval of the state Motor Vehicles Commission. He declined to comment further.
In exchange, Floresville ISD will acquire the dealership’s current location, which will become the new bus barn.
The current, 2-acre bus barn property -- which is a third the size of the Richardson Bros. site -- likely will be sold, Barber said.
“The [new] facility gives us the ability to work on buses,” he said. “It gives us more parking for buses and for our bus drivers’ vehicles.”
Barber said the two parties expect to close on the transaction within the next month. Richardson Bros. will have to own its new property before construction can begin. It is estimated that both the dealership and the district will complete these moves by mid-2013.
