FLORESVILLE -- The fifth annual Floresville Long Term Care Senior Olympics is scheduled for Monday through Friday, May 14-18, during National Nursing Home Week.

Activity directors and social workers from the three Floresville nursing homes (Floresville Nursing and Rehab, Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home, and Regency Manor) have joined together to plan a fun-filled week for Floresville long-term care residents.

The week will commence on May 14 at 9:30 a.m. with a parade, which will leave Regency Manor going to Floresville Nursing Center, and concluding at Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home. The administrator and director of nurses of each facility will present the Olympic flag and Olympic torch to their residents. Wilson County Classic Car Club will help lead the parade, with Apollo Ambulance following behind, showcasing the American flag. Community leaders are invited to show their Olympic spirit and support by joining in at Regency Manor on Wednesday, May 9, at 9 a.m. for a rousing, fun-filled kickoff celebration.

Competition in the Olympic Games will begin on Tuesday, May 15, at 9:30 a.m. at Regency Manor, where residents will compete in Hoops, Wheelchair Races, Javelin Throw, Cow Chip Toss, and Roping the Steer. Floresville Nursing and Rehab will host the second day of competition, where residents will try their hand at Olympic Ring Toss, Pin Drop, Wet & Wild Toss, Bean Bag Toss, Toilet Paper Toss, and Hole in One. Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home will host the third day of games, with competitions in Grenade Toss, Basic Training, Sharp Shooting, Veteran Trivia, and Basketball Bull’s-Eye.

The week will conclude on Friday, May 18, at 9 a.m. with a dance, presentation of medals, and a barbecue at the Floresville River Park. During this event, winners will receive their gold, silver, and bronze medals at 11 a.m. Prior to the awards presentation, residents will enjoy a dance with music by D.J. Magic, and an hour of bingo. Lunch will follow with Wiatrek’s hamburgers, as folks from Apollo manage the grill.

Friends, relatives, and the community are invited to join the fun on any or all of the days’ events. Donations of bingo prizes for the residents would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at Regency Manor prior to the event or at the park on May 18.

The long-term care facilities of Floresville appreciate those who volunteer and help with these special events. Nursing home residents are eagerly anticipating a week of fun events at the Senior Olympics 2012. Let’s show them a good time.
