After winning the district championship two weeks ago, and for the 12th consecutive year, La Vernia’s Lady Bears set their sights on a bigger prize. This past weekend, they won the Region IV team championship for the second time in the past five years. The team was runner-up another two times during that span.

Senior Natalie Baker now joins Audrey Strey Andrews and Rhonda Watson as the school’s only four-time State Track Meet qualifiers. In addition, senior Amy Gastauer will be making her third trip to State. Senior Haley Bruner and junior Brittani Dear are now two-time State qualifiers. Junior Xanthe Harston will be making her first trip.

The oldest La Vernia High School track record -- Annie Brooks’ 100-meter dash time of 12.19 -- was broken this year by Dear’s outstanding preliminary time of 11.98 (F.A.T.). Olivia Hinojosa becomes La Vernia’s first freshman to qualify for the state championships in two different sports (cross country and track) in the same school year. Hinojosa, freshman Madi Trees, and sophomore Bailee Vrana become the first athletes to all score in the same event at a regional meet. Sophomore Courtnie Ybarra threw a personal best in the discus with a 116-foot, 1-inch effort.

“Our kids had a great day,” said Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “Getting to state in any sport is incredibly difficult, and we never take it for granted.

“They’ve had a tremendous work ethic all year long, and I’m very happy for them,” he added. “We’re honored and humbled to represent our school and community.”
