Pirettes make first-round exit from playoffs
Ryann Boening delivers a pitch during the Poth Pirettes’ 6-2 loss to Karnes City April 27.
FLORESVILLE -- With a second-place finish in District 29-2A, the Poth Pirette softball team qualified for the playoffs. The Pirettes entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed behind Marion, but suffered a first-round bi-district loss to Karnes City last week in a best-of-three series.
The teams met in their first game April 27, and the Lady Badgers got things going in the bottom of the second inning. Poth got right back into it in the top of the third inning with a combination of good hitting and smart base running.
The game changed in the bottom of the fourth, though, as the Lady Badgers had two on and two out. A sharply hit ball to centerfield scored 2, and Karnes City never looked back. In the end, it was the Lady Badgers with a 6-2 win over the Pirettes.
Down but not out, Poth attempted to regroup for the second game. They needed a win to keep the series alive, but Karnes City was after a swift resolution. The game went about as the first one had, and in the end, it was once again the Lady Badgers with the win, this time by the score of 5-2.
With the loss, the Pirettes ended their season. The team was 8-2 in district play, and finished the year with an overall record of 12-12. While everyone in Poth was hoping for more, Head Coach Carilee Robbins tried to put things in perspective.
“I am disappointed that we did not win the series, but looking back on the season, I have never been prouder of a group of girls than I am of this team,” she said. “We knew coming into the season that we would be young, and it was rough at the beginning, but the kids held strong and worked to get the job done.”
The Pirettes will lose a pair of players from this season’s roster when they regroup in 2013, and their presence will certainly be missed. Robbins was quick to point out their contributions, too.
“I am extremely proud of my two seniors, Kelsey Garcia and Heather Rocha, for being great leaders and seeing us through,” she said.
