East Central falls to Clark, ends softball season
A close play at the plate creates excitement during last week’s bi-district series, but it wasn’t enough to help lift the Lady Hornets past the Clark Lady Cougars.
SAN ANTONIO -- After a strong District 28-5A showing, the season has come to an end for the East Central Lady Hornet softball team. The ladies put together an 8-2 district mark, but fell to Clark last week in a bi-district playoff series.
East Central and Clark met for the first game in a best-of-three series April 26, and the Lady Cougars took the win, 8-2.
Following a scoreless first inning of play, Clark jumped all over East Central in the top of the second inning to score 5 runs. The Lady Hornets came back in the bottom of the third to score 2 runs and narrow the gap, but Clark reassumed a 5-run lead with 2 additional runs in the top of the fourth. Things were quiet from there until the top of the seventh inning when the Lady Cougars added an insurance run. East Central had the final at-bat, but the Lady Hornets were retired before scoring.
In a one-game hole, East Central knew it had to have the win in game two, but Clark proved once again to be too much for the Lady Hornets, and East Central fell by the score of 7-3.
The Lady Hornets struck first in this contest, scoring 1 run in the top of the first inning. It was the start East Central needed, but the mood quickly changed in the bottom of the frame as Clark drove in 3 runs in the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Clark added another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-1 contest, but East Central came back in the fifth to score. By the end of the fifth inning of play, the score remained 4-2 in favor of Clark. The Lady Cougars tacked on 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead, and things were looking down for the Lady Hornets.
East Central managed to get back 1 run in the top of the seventh, but needed 5 to keep the game alive. When the side was retired, officials called the game, and the season officially ended for East Central.
Despite the loss, the Lady Hornets had a season for which they can be proud. The team put together an overall season record of 21-10, and went 8-2 to finish as the district runner-up in 28-5A.
