Five students of the Floresville FFA restored two tractors for competition in local, area, and state competition. When all was said and done, one team earned grand champion honors in Wilson County Junior Livestock Show ag mechanics, and both teams won their respective classes in the San Antonio Tractor Restoration Show.
Mathieu Seguin, Lacee Popham, and Liz Vanheeswyk restored a 1959 Ford Powermaster tractor. The tractor was completely taken apart, evaluated, and then reassembled by the students, replacing parts as necessary. “These students worked every morning before school, during Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, and countless week-ends,” said Michael Billings, Floresville ag teacher.
The Powermaster tractor was shown at the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show in January, winning its class and grand champion of the show honors.
The team entered the tractor in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo competition. At San Antonio, the tractor was mechanically evaluated and the students’ knowledge was tested. These students placed first in their class.
The tractor was taken to the Houston Livestock Show where it was evaluated and received a blue ribbon for quality.
Paul Stratemann and Craig Sumner restored a 1938 John Deere G for their tractor project. The tractor is owned by James and Clinton Noll and family of Falls City. The students worked on the tractor every morning and afternoon from September until February, Billings said.
“It was completely taken apart; no bolt was left unturned,” Billings said. “Detail to originality is very important in these contests,” he said.
In the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the duo’s tractor earned first place in its age class and went on to win the entire Tractor Restoration Contest. Stratemann and Sumner were each awarded a $6,000 scholarship.
In Houston, the John Deere tractor was awarded a blue ribbon and placed third in its age class.
“These students did a great job representing Floresville FFA across the state,” Billings said. “I don’t know if one school has ever won two out of three classes at the San Antonio Tractor Restoration Show. This does not happen very often,” he said.
There are many different people in our community that helped with both of the tractor projects.
Titan Tire Company donated eight brand new tires for these tractor projects. “If you need agricultural tires, look at Titan,” Billings said. “They support the FFA.”
The Floresville FFA would like to thank the following businesses and individuals that help their program in many different ways: Bolf Truck Sales and Service for technical advice and service; Joey Wiatrek of Ewald Tractor; Danny with Industrial Engine; Greg Walls with Midway Automotive; Charlie Felux at Tractor City; Pruski’s Service Station; Charlie Dugan used antique tractors; Bryan Goodchild; Jeff Talley; K&K Tractor Parts; Minn-Kota; Jono Kutac; and the Noll family for sponsoring the John Deere tractor.
