In church recently as we sang “Standing on the Promises”, I recalled a wonderful experience that happened when I was young.
Sitting beside the wooden cistern, I looked up into the drifting clouds ~ I can still see them today ~ and asked God if He was real; and if He was real, would He show me a sign ~ answer my question. I was young, maybe 10 or 11; too young to understand about God’s signs. But isn’t it interesting that almost 60 years later, I still remember that moment (that encounter) so vividly. I didn’t realize at that time that God did speak to me. It was more like and entering into my being. He has been within me, protecting me, ever since.
The song reminds me of that experience because it was about that time that I memorized “Standing on the Promises”. Even then I knew I couldn’t carry a tune, but I would go outside and sing with great enthusiasm and without inhibition.
I love the memories of my childhood. I have a comment in my Bible, quoted from Bro Glenn Young, now at Clearlake Baptist Church: “We are blessed so that we may share our blessings with others.” So maybe this memory will be a shared blessing. |
