SAN ANTONIO -- They made a great showing in the first game of their bi-district playoff series, but after dropping both games to George West last Saturday, the season has come to an end for the Stockdale Brahma baseball team.

The Brahmas traveled to Southside High School last Friday evening, May 4, to face the George West Longhorns in game one of a best-of-three series.

Senior Colton West was on the mound for the Brahmas, and the team got things rolling early in the top of the first with a trio of runs to start the game. George West came back in the bottom of the first to score 1 run, but the Brahmas maintained their early advantage.

After a scoreless second inning, George West scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the third, closing the gap to 3-2. The Brahmas came right back in the top of the fourth, though, scoring 3 runs, and making it a 6-2 game. Stockdale added 1 more run in the sixth, and 1 in the seventh en route to an 8-2 victory and a one-game lead in the series.

West helped his own cause at the plate, going 3 for 5 on the night with a double and two RBIs. Josh Vela and Taylor Deason each went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and Miguel Marquez was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

West gave up just 2 hits in the game while facing a total of 33 batters on the night. He tallied 15 strikeouts, though he did give up 6 walks and hit one batter.

The teams went home, but returned on Saturday afternoon to close out the series. The Brahmas had a one-game lead, but the Longhorns weren’t ready to throw in the towel. The two teams took the field for game No. 2, and in the end, it was George West with the 5-0 win, handing the Brahmas a setback, and tying the series at one game apiece.

After a short break, the teams retook the field for the second half of a double-header. The Brahmas did better at the plate and produced a 5-run effort of their own during the game, but George West scored 10, and handed the Brahmas a 10-5 loss. The pair of wins gave the Longhorns the series win, and advances them to the area championship.

The Brahmas will lose some talent to graduation, but the team is filled with young players, and Stockdale should make a good showing when it returns to the diamond next spring.
