Lady Bears fall to Liberty Hill in area game
La Vernia’s Morgan Mikes delivers a pitch during the Lady Bears’ 10-0 bi-district win over Somerset last week.
LA VERNIA -- After going 10-2 in district play, the La Vernia Lady Bear softball team entered the 2012 playoff season as the No. 2 seed from District 28-3A. La Vernia dominated the Somerset Lady Bulldogs in a bi-district meeting April 30, but then fell to Liberty Hill on May 3 in the area championship.
In their game with Somerset, the Lady Bears retired the side in the top of the first inning, then went to work in the bottom half of the frame, scoring 5 La Vernia runs. The team added another run in the second inning, and 1 more in the third to take a 7-0 lead over Somerset. The Lady Bulldogs managed to hold La Vernia from scoring in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Bears stormed back in the fifth to score 3 more runs, prompting officials to call the game at 10-0 due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Johnna Sturm helped lead the Lady Bear offense with two doubles and 2 RBIs on the night. Shawna Oehlke had a double and also drove in 2 runs. Brooke Martinez and Rene Cummings also hit doubles for La Vernia, and Savannah Martinez, Kenzie Conner, and Allisen Saenz each earned RBIs, as well.
Morgan Mikes got things done on the mound for La Vernia, as the right-hander faced just 19 batters through five innings.
In the second round of playoff competition, the Lady Bears traveled to San Marcos to take on the team from Liberty Hill. The Lady Bears made it close, but eventually fell in the one-game playoff by the final score of 10-9.
La Vernia scored in the top of the first inning, and held the 1-0 lead through two. The Lady Bears got their bats going again in the top of the third with 3 additional runs, and led 4-0 going into the bottom of the inning. Liberty Hill got things heated up in the third as well, though, and scored 3 runs to make it a 4-3 contest. Then, in the top of the fourth, La Vernia stretched out its lead with 2 more runs, but Liberty Hill scored 3 in the bottom half and the score was all tied up at 6-6.
The Lady Bears had their worst inning of the night in the fifth, as the La Vernia sticks yielded no runs in the top of the inning, and the gloves gave up 4 runs in the bottom of the frame. Liberty Hill took its first lead of the game at 10-6, and time was winding down for the Lady Bears.
La Vernia scored 1 run in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 10-7 game, and held Liberty Hill in the bottom of the sixth. La Vernia had just one shot left to make it happen, and needed 3 runs in the seventh to keep their hopes alive. Things looked good at one point, and the Lady Bears scored 2 runs, but the final out soon followed. La Vernia was just 1 run short, as the team fell by the final score of 10-9.
Sage Martinez led the team at the plate, as she went 3 for 3 with a home run, a triple, and 3 RBIs. Sturm also had a good night at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Conner, Rios, Cummings, Oehlke, and Saenz all had hits during the game, and Conner and Cummings each had an RBI. Conner, Rios, Megan Schocke, and Saenz all had stolen bases, as well.
The Lady Bears end their season with an overall record of 19-15. The team finished second in the district and won the bi-district title.
