Terry Kelley signs with Dordt College
Terry Kelley of East Central is joined by his mother, Linda; his father, Terry Sr.; and Hornet Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Robert Walker (back) as he signs his letter of intent to attend school and play football for Dordt College in Iowa.
EAST CENTRAL -- Following a successful high school football career at East Central, senior offensive lineman Terry Kelley will now trade in his Hornet jersey for a Dordt College Defenders uniform. Kelley signed his letter of intent to Dordt College April 30.
Located in Sioux Center, Iowa, a town of about 7,000, Dordt College is a small Christian school that Kelley believes fits him perfectly. Kelley considered several other schools, including Tarleton State University and a college in California, but ultimately decided on Dordt because of his faith.
“I’m looking forward to the Christian-based environment,” Kelley said. “They hold worships almost every night.”
While attending Dordt, Kelley plans to major in kinesiology, and hopes to work as a coach and teacher after graduation. His favorite subject is athletics, with history falling into second place.
Making the move to Iowa will mean leaving a lot of things behind, and in addition to his friends and family, Kelley said he will miss the food in San Antonio.
“They don’t have Mexican food in Iowa. They have Taco Bell and a place called Taco John,” Kelley said with a laugh. “That’s it.”
Although he may have trouble satisfying his Mexican food cravings, Kelley isn’t likely to have any difficulties transitioning to the college game. He played left guard for the Hornets, but may be moved around the offensive line a bit at Dordt. He said his new coaches also hinted that he might see some playing time on the defensive side of the ball as a nose guard. Kelley said he is open to the idea of playing defense, but enjoys his role on offense where he gets to “keep the little guys safe.”
Kelley isn’t going yet, though, and still has a few senior memories yet to make. He has plenty of memories from his days in a Hornet uniform, but said the team’s loss to Madison this year will always stay with him.
“We were winning by a point at halftime even though everyone predicted it would be a blowout,” he said. “We did eventually lose, but it was a close game and we played really well.”
Kelley is ready to embrace this new chapter in his life, but will always remember the path that lies behind him. He thanked his parents for their influence and guidance over the years. He had another to praise as well.
“I’m just thankful that God gave me the chance,” he said.
