Drive to revive Arbor Day
Falls City fourth-graders receive live oak trees from Director Larry Dement of the Karnes County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Arbor Day was celebrated in Texas on Friday, April 27, this year and approximately 170 fourth-graders in Karnes County rolled up their sleeves and planted a live oak tree. The kids will become members of Fourth Grade Foresters.
The project’s goal is to help revitalize a remarkable idea -- observation of Arbor Day in America’s schools. Each fourth-grader at the elementary schools in Falls City, Karnes City, Kenedy, and Runge received live oak trees to take home and plant. A live oak tree was also supplied to each elementary school to plant on the school’s campus.
The live oak trees were supplied by the Karnes County Soil and Water Conservation District, and directors Larry Dement and Lee Hammack delivered and handed out the trees to the fourth-graders.
“This project is made possible because community business people like Karnes County Soil and Water Conservation District covered the cost of each of the individually packaged live oak trees, so that there is no cost to the students, the teachers, the school, or the taxpayer,” said Debra Ersch, co-founder of the Fourth Grade Foresters Project. “It’s a wonderful way to show support for the community, education, and the environment.”
Fourth Grade Foresters USA was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business, or organization to send the fourth-grade students at an elementary school home with a tree of their own to plant and care for.
Each fourth-grader receives an individually packaged 12-inch-to-18-inch tree seedling packaged by workers with disabilities.
Now tree planting is even more important than ever. Trees take carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere and clean the air we breathe.
Planting trees is a simple, inexpensive, and easy way to improve the community.
