FLORESVILLE -- Despite growing opposition and the absence of a report on a May 7 public hearing about the proposal, the Floresville City Council May 10 voted 3-2 in favor of publishing its intent to issue certificates of obligation aimed at funding an outdoor sports complex.

The verbiage of the agenda item, however, makes no mention of the amount of the funds or their planned utilization. Rather, it reads that the council authorized and approved “publication of notice of intention to issue certificates of obligation; complying with the requirements contained in the Securities and Exchange Commission Rule 15C2-12; and providing an effective date.”

Following the council’s action, citizens have launched a petition to halt the issuance of the debt, in accordance with Section 271.049 of the Texas Local Government Code. If at least 5 percent of the city’s registered voters sign the petition, the certificates cannot be issued unless approved in an election.

For more, read the May 16 print edition of the Wilson County News.
