Killeen, Tx.,(May 12th, 2012) Texas Thunder Speedway was one of very few Texas tracks to avoid the wrath of Mother Nature and get a Saturday night show in. This can be good and bad, at the same time. On the good side you get several new drivers/cars, adding to the car count,conversely the extreme rains take their toll on the track, an unavoidable issue.
The track hosted its Mother’s Day special, along with Power Wheels Night for the kids to show their stuff as future racers. With other area rainouts, two IMCA Nationals point’s leaders made their appearance to the track to give the 14 mile, high-banked, clay oval their best shot.
In the IMCA Stock Cars, the track saw JC Howell come through the gate to try to maintain his point’s advantage. Making a return to a place that he’s seen numerous win, IMCA Modified points leader and Stock Car runner-up, Keith White hoped to use his past experience to pad his IMCA Modified lead and close the gap on Howell in the Stock Cars.
Henderson Hole Hops to Modified Main
Taylor’s Hardy Henderson grabbed the lead from past track champion, Ken Old early and never looked back. Probably a good thing as he was chased by Mike McCarthy, then Cham Savage after a late restart. Savage, wholooked to be faster, couldn’t get by as Henderson held the fast line in his Mid-Tex Towing & Recovery, Fab Con, 517 Graphics. Berryman Roofing, Performance Machine, BMS by DMR Chassis.
Old led the 20-car field into turn 1 as green waved on the 20-lap IMCA Modified main. Trailing Old were McCarthy, Justin Redmon, Jimmy Tidwell and H. Henderson. Tidwell lost a spring on lap 1 to bring out a quick caution. As green waved again it was three wide up front as the pack began to stack up. H. Henderson got a huge run off the top side to grab the lead from Old on lap 2.
McCarthy was able to get around Old on lap 4 for second with National points leader, White pulling off early. While H. Henderson and McCarthy started to gap the pack, PJ Egbert, Scooter Bates and Savage were three wide for fifth. The leaders hit traffic on lap 8 giving H. Henderson a slight margin on McCarthy. Savage used slower cars to his advantage moving past Old and Redmon for third.
Once clear, McCarthy closed back in on H. Henderson, but before a battle began Jerry Frydrych went around after contact with GW Egbert, who was trying to lap him. GW Egbert was sent to the tail for the contact. On the restart, Savage got past McCarthy for second and caught H. Henderson for the lead. Savage looked low in turn 2 on laps 18 and 19, but H. Henderson held the top line and fought off Savage for the checkers.
“This has taken two years of hard work to get back in the Winners Circle,” said Henderson, the 2010 track champ. “We’ve been struggling to get a win and it’s been a long, hard battle. This is one of the toughest Saturday night fields in Texas. We have past National champions(PJ Egbert and Keith White) and past track champs, including myself running here. When you run good here, you can run good anywhere. It’s a struggle every week.”
“I didn’t like leading that race, that early. I’d occasionally look at the scoreboard to see who was coming. I know that there are guys coming. When you’re out there leading you don’t know if your line is still the fastest. I don’t have anyone helping me out there, you’re pretty much on your own. You just have to listen and feel for them.”

Trevor Tops After Tech in Sportmods
Trevor Egbert thought he had lost the IMCA Southern Sportmod feature by a mere .064 seconds according to timing and scoring to David Goode jr. In a strange twist, Goode had a brain lapse after the Winners Circle celebration and failed to report to the tech area. Goode had gotten the spot from early leader Michael Gaunet, and was pressured the final five laps from Egbert before eking out the win by the small margin.
Michael Gaunet led the way as the 16-car, 20-lap IMCA SSM feature took the green. Goode, Kenny Ware and Dennis Purrington fell in line while Don Painter was side by side with Egbert for fifth. Egbert got that spot while Goode started to put the heat on Gaunet. Goode got under Gaunet in turns 3-4 to grab the top spot on lap 7.
Gaunet would then half spin and fall to sixth and back into a battle between Johnny Torres and Chris Cogburn. At halfway the top five were Goode, Egbert, Ware, Painter and Ricky Rodriguez with Torres running wheel to wheel with Gaunet. Egbert had just closed in on Goode when a lapped car split the two, as the lead group encountered slower cars. Shelley Sakhnini did a half collecting Torres and bringing out a lap 15 yellow.
On the restart, Egbert tried low and got beside Goode in turns 3-4, while Rodriguez and Cogburn were side by side for fifth. The lead duo continued to scrap it out with Egbert giving Goode looks on the bottom. On the last lap, Egbert gave Goode his best shot, only to come up a bit short at the line. Egbert, in the Farmers Insurance, Big Tex Autoplex, 121 Towing, E&E Collision, Pro Image Graphics, Swenson Racing Shocks, 89 Motorsports, Bumpers by Egberts, Lingo Racing Engines, Big Chief Chassis, he would be rewarded when Goode drove back to his pits without stopping in tech.
“We’ve all won and lost races like that,” replied Egbert. “But rules are rules. It’s not quite as gratifying as beating them on the track. It’s good that the track upheld the rules.”
“This is the first time driving my dad’s car this year. It was a little tight so I had to change my driving style to make the car fast. You can never really have a plan to get from the middle to the front. You just try to stay out of trouble and pass as many cars as you can early. Racing here, when a fast car gets out front, it’s hard to chase them down. That one caution helped us out a bit.”
“I’ve been in a Destroyer all year, and this is my dad’s Big Chief Chassis, plus we have an Express by 89 coming. We hope to be in it next week. We have a baseline set up we use on all the cars. This was set up for my dad last week and he was pretty fast in it. I really didn’t change anything, just a little lead to make sure we made weight.”

Jones Jousts with White and Batt for I-Stock Win
In the always competitive IMCA Stock Car feature, track points leader and former champion, Eric Jones(Killeen) had the battle of his life on his hands. First Jones had to fight with long-time friend and rival, Jason Batt just to get the lead. After several door to door laps Jones got the spot, and then at the end had to hold off National point’s chaser, Keith White, to secure the victory.
Tony Hamil was out front first followed by Justin Wierenga, Batt, Peter Delevan and Jones. Batt wasted little time getting byWierenga and on Hamil for the lead. Batt got past Hamil for the top spot on lap 3, with Jones hot on his heels and White up to fourth. Once White picked off third, the top three began to pull away running nose to tail. Just before halfway, JC Howell made his way to the top five while Jones was looking low on Batt.
Adam Schwarz broke and rolled to a stop in turn 4 to bring out a yellow on lap 9. On the restart with top three setting sail, Howell took fourth from Delevan. At halfway Jones and Batt were side by side, withWhite lurking, Howell closing and Matt Guillaume getting fifth. Jones and Batt had the crowd on their feet as they ran door to door for six laps before Jones got out front.
Batt tried to crossover on Jones, while Howell rolled a tire off and slowed. Batt gave White a small opening, and the multi-time Southern Sportmod champion jumped on the mistake taking second. White and Batt swapped the spot until White gained control. White had only a couple laps to reel in Jones and never could mount a challenge as Jones crossed the line in the Danny’s Transmissions, Garvin Machine Shop, Destroyer Chassis.
“I had to run each lap as hard as I could,” commented Jones. “I hoped that he(Batt) would make a mistake, and he doesn’t make many. He slipped a little in turn 1 and I was able to get a run. It took me several laps to finally get around him after inching my way, lap after lap. Sometimes that’s what it takes. I’m glad I was able to pass him clean and that we had a great race going on for the fans.”
“Jason and I are friends and we put a lot of trust in each other. Last week I think we were separated by .066 at the finish of the race. Opening night we ran side by side for about half the race also. We run against each other every week and have the most respect for each other and then hang out afterwards.”
“I saw that Keith(White) was second on the scoreboard and knew he’d be on my back bumper. Don’t let him fool you, he may not run here very often anymore, but he knows this track. He’s not the defending National points champion in I-Stocks for nothing.”

Scrivner Scores First Hobby Stock Win
Robert Scrivner(Waco) picked up his first ever Texas Thunder Speedway trophy going flag to flag in the IMCA Hobby Stock main. R. Scrivner battled early with Paul Scrivner then built a half straightaway margin going on Charles Cosper to grab his first win in the Lambs Muffler Center, Central Texas Lawn & Sprinkler, Hewitt Gun Shop, Vogue Cleaners, Greens Transmissionssponsored car.
The Scriveners’ stayed side by side through turns 1-3, with a three wide battle for third behind them. As they sorted out it was R. Scrivner leading lap 1 with P. Scrivner, Zach Riley, Cosper and Garrett Rawls falling in line. Riley got by P. Scrivner for second but contact sent him around for a lap 2 caution that saw P. Scrivner receive the black flag.
Once back to green, Rawls began pressuring R. Scrivnerfor the lead, but spun himself out in turn 4. As Riley worked his way back up, Anthony Simcik rolled a tire of the bead while running third, giving Riley the spot. Up front R. Scrivner was building his lead over Cosper in the waning laps leaving him to go unchallenged to the checkers.

Florio Fastest in Street Stock Scramble
Copperas Cove’s, Chris Florio picked up his fourth checkers of the year, third in a row, taking the Street Stock race, that saw Duane Toyne take a tumble in the 15-lap feature. Florio got the lead at midway from Jacob Sakhnini and was being chased down by Toyne until he broke a wheel, dug in and rolled twice in turn three. From there Florio went unchallenged to the victory while Dave Meadows battled with Sakhnini.
Sakhnini was first off turn 2 as the 16-car field took the green trailed by Florio, Meadows, point’s leader Tristan Carman and Gary Norman. As Florio and Meadows dueled door to door, Norman went up in smoke and stopped short of the pit exit for a lap 4 caution. As Sakhnini and Florio got away, Toyne and Carman were side by side for fourth. Florio got alongside Sakhnini on lap 5 with the two in a dead heat at the line on lap 6. Florio got the edge on lap 7, while Toyne finally secured fourth.
Toyne then picked off Meadows for third on lap 10 and was closing in on Sakhnini for second when he went for a wild ride and brought out the red on lap 11. On the restart, Meadows took second from Sakhnini, but Florio was already in the wind and well on his way to the win the D&D Cabinets, Phils Motorsports, Gibson and Associates, Camaro.

Nine cars started the 10-lap Texas Twister feature with Jason Miller jumping out front early. Ricky Hardcastle made his way up to challenge Miller getting the top spot on lap 2. Hardcastle then eased aheadwhile Jared Tracy and Monique Bagent worked past Miller for second and third. Hardcastle maintained his lead to the finish taking his third win of the season.

Former Texas Twister champion, Austin Smith(Lampasas) picked up the win in the Outlaw Twister feature win a comfortable lead. Smith jumped out front quickly while point’s leader, Brian Bagent and Kelvin Harper battled side by side. Bagent finally secures the spot, but Smith had already checked out. As Smith, in his Scotty’s Automotive Honda, was taking his fifth checkers in a row, Tommy Hultz found himself head-on into the pit catch fence. Hultz was alright, but a spectator was slightly injured in a fall while trying to flee the oncoming car.
