Petition seeks to have voters decide on sports complex

FLORESVILLE -- Citizens are circulating a petition in opposition to the Floresville City Council’s May 10 vote to publish its notice of intention to issue certificates of obligation. The petition indicates that it is in accordance with Section 271.049 of the Texas Local Government Code.

If at least 5 percent of the city’s registered voters sign the petition, the certificates cannot be issued unless approved in an election. Organizers of the petition agree there is a need for improvements and expansion, but want taxpayers to see a plan for the use of the funds before approving the $1.8 million debt proposed.

Discussed by the council in relation to the certificates of obligation is a sports complex being proposed for construction on the grounds of the Lauro G. De Leon III Floresville Event Center on S.H. 97 West in Floresville. Critics say the council and Mayor Daniel Tejada have been pushing ahead with the project without considering public opinion and without presenting a detailed plan.

On May 13, Tejada posted on his Facebook page that the council voted to renovate the Floresville River Park while adding additional athletic fields. No such vote has occurred during a public meeting of the council.

For more on the May 10 council meeting, see article above.

Will the Wilson County News be there to report this? Maybe then the San Antonio paper will pick up the story. Maybe we need to call the WOAI Troubleshooters. They do a great job in exposing illegal behavior!

Why do city leaders concentrate on a sports park that will be used mostly by county residents not city residents? If it's really gonna be such an economic catalyst for the area seems like the county would get behind the sports ... More ›

A "plan" is one thing, but where is the plan to pay for all these things? The problem here is the lack of a plan -- other than more debt -- to pay for all these things.
