Sybil Genevieve Eugenie Johnson Fields
Sybil Genevieve Eugenie Johnson Fields died Monday, May 7, 2012, after a brief illness in the Country Care Manor in La Vernia, Texas. Sybil was born in Scotsguard, Sask., Canada, on June 1, 1919, the daughter of Henry and Emma Johnson.
Sybil enjoyed a happy childhood while attending the one-room schoolhouse in Scotsguard through high school. As a young woman, she moved to Quebec, Montreal, Canada, and earned her registered nursing degree from Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. That year, she met and married Theron J. Fields. Sybil worked as a nurse while Theron attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. When they began their family, Sybil became a full-time mother and homemaker. She relished the role and became an excellent interior decorator, gardener, and accomplished hostess.
They moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Ithaca, N.Y., where Theron worked for Shell Oil Co. and returned to his education at Cornell University, eventually earning his Ph.D.
In 1963, Sybil, Theron, and their three children moved to Norris, Tenn. Theron began a career with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Sybil embraced community service, including neighborhood chairman and troop leader of the Girl Scouts, leader of the Cub Scouts, and volunteer for Head Start, Planned Parenthood, and Good Neighbors. She was precinct chairman of the Democratic Party in Anderson County, and frequently served as officer of the day during elections. Sybil was also an active member of the PTA and the Band Boosters. Her favorite activity was her Wednesday night bridge club in Norris.
Sybil and family were members of the Norris Religious Fellowship Church. Sybil served as treasurer for the Woman’s Fellowship for decades, Sunday school teacher, and member and chairman of numerous committees over the years.
After Theron retired, they traveled frequently with lifelong friends and joined President Jimmy Carter’s Friendship Force, traveling to Russia to foster better relations with the Russian people. She moved to Floresville, Texas, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Michael Kellett in August 2005.
Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, Henry P. and Emma Bergh Johnson, and her brother, Odell Johnson, all formerly of Scotsguard, Sask., Canada; and her husband, Dr. Theron J. Fields.
She is survived by her children, Bart Fields and wife Helena of Sugar Land, Sonja Kellett and husband Michael of Floresville, and Eric Fields and wife Teresa of Maryville, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Lauren Fields and Brandon Fields of Sugar Land, and Abbie Fields and Bradley Fields of Maryville, Tenn.
A memorial service is planned at the Fellowship Church in Norris, Tenn., later this year.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Religious Fellowship Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 267, Norris, TN 37828.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Rachael and the entire staff of the Country Care Manor Nursing Home, for their wonderful care during her final days.
