We are here today to celebrate the life of Madie Denning Sutton and to say farewell and aloha on her way to paradise. Madie loved going to Hawaii to visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She thought it was so beautiful and peaceful. She was sure it was right next door to heaven. Madie passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the age of 84. She was born Oct. 17, 1927, in Stockdale, Texas, to Harold “Forty” and Lena Polan Denning.

She attended school in Stockdale and graduated from Stockdale High School in 1945. She was a long distance telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and also worked as an operator at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio Hotel in San Antonio.

She married Wayne Sutton Nov. 26, 1955. They moved to Pleasanton, where they operated a business, Oil Tool Service Inc., for many years. They did oil-field repair work. Madie was a quiet, unassuming person, but she dearly loved her family and friends. She was a Christian, and believed that God and his angels watched over her and protected her during her entire life. Never one to seek attention, she will be remembered for her thoughtfulness and kindness to everyone. Lord, we thank you for this life and all the love she shared with us, her family said.

Madie was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; her beloved parents; one sister, Tuleta Schaefer; and three brothers, Durwood, George, and Deedie Denning.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Sandra Jo Mitchell and husband Gary of Pleasanton; her kind and caring stepson, Dan Sutton of San Antonio; her stepdaughter, Perthena Latchaw of Shawnee, Okla.; her two dear and loving grandsons, Staff Sgt. Rickey Joe Mitchell and wife Amanda of Phenix City, Ala., and Garrett Mitchell and wife Vikki of San Antonio; five step-grandchildren, Wayne Scott Sutton of California, Lisa White and husband Lt. Col. Greg White of Florida, Michele Sutton and husband John Stowell of Michigan, Capt. Jason Latchaw and wife Raelynn of Pensacola, Fla., and Ramona Schober and husband Mathew of Tulsa, Okla.; and 12 great-grandchildren, Greg, Lexi, and Chris Sikes-Mitchell, Ryland Mitchell, Lindsey, Grayson, and Landon White, Kayla and Sophie Sutton, Stella Stowell, and Nathan and Gabriel Latchaw.

A visitation was held Thursday, May 10, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Stockdale.

A funeral service was held Friday at 2 p.m. in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating.

Interment followed in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale.

Memorial contributions may be made in Madie’s name to the charity of one’s choice.
