THREE RIVERS -- After a two-week break from the competition, the Poth Pirate baseball team returned to action last Saturday in a one-game playoff with Bishop for the area championship. In the end, however, it was the Badgers with the 10-1 victory, and the pass on to the regional quarterfinals.

The Pirates got started right in the top of the first inning with a run, but the Badgers responded with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 after one.

The second inning wasn’t nearly as good as the first for Poth, as the Pirates were held scoreless during their at-bat. When the Badgers came to the plate, however, Bishop managed to bring in 4 runs, and took a commanding 5-1 advantage into the third.

The Badgers went on to add 2 runs in the third, 1 run in the fifth, and 2 final runs in the sixth inning. During that same time, the Pirates were held scoreless, save their lone first-inning run.

Poth had one final chance at the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but needed 9 runs to keep the game alive. After failing to score, the game was final at 10-1.

Blake Lyssy pitched three innings for Poth, and then Trey Broyles came on in relief. The duo combined for five strikeouts, but also gave up five walks. Lyssy was officially charged with the loss.

Offensively, Blake Lyssy led the Pirates at the plate. He went 2 for 3 on the night, and drove in the lone Poth run. Braden Lyssy and Tyler Kallies also had hits in the game, and Kallies drew one walk.

The Pirates ended their season with an overall record of 19-5, and went 13-1 through district play to capture the 30-2A title.
