About politics and other things

There’s been a lot of buzz recently about a newly discovered promotional publication that refers to Barack Obama’s birth in Kenya.

The immediate question is why no one in the mainstream media ever uncovered this during Obama’s original campaign for the presidency. These are the same media personalities who were fomenting about Sarah Palin and everything, however trivial, about her private life, yet they never saw Obama’s college transcripts or even a record of what he studied in college. They never uncovered his medical records, or anything else about their “first black president,” who is half white.

One might ask why that is, but I think we all know why. They were supporting him rather than doing their jobs as reporters. They made it their mission, instead, to hound the Palin family and every other conservative about everything, however personal, that they could uncover.

This really says a lot about American journalism as a whole, but it also says something about our current president.

Breitbart News has discovered a 36-page booklet produced in 1991 by Obama’s literary agency at the time, stating that he was “born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii.”

In fact, www.breitbart.com has uncovered several other sources that also mention his Kenyan birth, something the mainstream media now refer to as “false” information. While this discovery is likely to renew the furor from the so-called birthers about conspiracies that had presumably been put to rest when Obama finally produced a copy of his birth certificate, www.breitbart.com explains that it was never their intention to claim that the president was not born in the United States. Its disclaimer further states that its late founder, Andrew Breitbart, had never believed in the birther theory.

The larger problem here is not whether the president was born in Hawaii or Kenya. He is our president now and we have accepted that he was born in Hawaii.

The bigger problem is about the misinformation out there. How did this “false information” get published in the first place?

“Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, ... . His commitment to social and racial issues will be evident in his first book, Journeys in Black and White.”

We know that the book later became Dreams from My Father instead, but this misinformation appeared even after he was in the Senate, and until he began his campaign for president.

This would indicate two problems. First, digital records can too easily be altered. This is further reinforced by Obama’s taking credit for and trying to enhance his own standing in history. The White House has recently gone onto the official online biographical pages of past presidents, and inserted information about Obama’s own accomplishments, so as to relate the accomplishments of past commanders in chief to the current one.

The second, and larger, problem that the misinformation about his Kenyan birth indicates is that Obama is not beyond stretching the truth, or enhancing what he says, for purely political purposes.

Did it not, indeed, sound quite exotic to read about “a Kenyan-born” community organizer who became a U.S. Senator? Problems arose, however, when his presidential aspirations became apparent, and the misinformation had to be corrected.

The larger problem with the questions about the president’s birth is his dishonesty toward the American people. They must ask, if he was willing to stretch the truth about his birth, what else may he be less than honest about?

Andrew misses the point of the editorial which is that Obama was party to misinformation being used when it was in his best interest. That's dishonest.

Unfortunately this editorial lacks clarity. Obama has a birth record issued by Hawaii, which trumps some publicists writing. Second, and the one most over looked; Obama's mother was born in the United States. That makes him ... More ›
