A Floresville man who allegedly led officers on a March 14, 2011, pursuit that ended with the suspect being shot, is headed for trial. Jury selection in the case against 29-year-old Adrian Benavides begins May 29, according to court records. Attorneys involved in the case announced May 16 in Wilson County District Court that the trial is estimated to take four days.
Benavides is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle for his alleged role in the incident. He allegedly led officers from the Floresville Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol, and the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office on a lunch-hour chase on the streets of Floresville, before parking his vehicle on Sixth Street and fleeing his vehicle on foot.
The drama came to an abrupt end in the back yard of a residence, where the suspect allegedly drew a weapon, prompting a Wilson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy to fire at Benavides four times. He was struck twice.
If convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant, Benavides could serve up to life in prison.
Also appearing before 218th District Court Judge Stella Saxon for a docket call was 29-year-old Jordan Lewis of San Antonio. Court records indicate that the court dates for his two cases -- a March 3 incident that led to charges of aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated kidnapping, escape, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and a burglary that occurred Nov. 7, 2011 -- have been combined. Lewis’ court-appointed attorney, Gregory Wilson, withdrew from the case and was replaced with Richard Briggs.
Lewis, who was arraigned May 8 on the newer charges, is set to return to court June 13 for a pretrial hearing, followed by a docket call July 17. Jury selection in his trial is set for July 30.
Other defendants with cases pending in Wilson County District Court include:
•Ramon Lopez, 26, who was in court May 16 for a docket call. He is charged with murder in connection with the June 6, 2011, stabbing death of 57-year-old Jose Antonio Hernandez. His docket call was rescheduled to June 13, with jury selection in his trial set for June 27.
•Bobby Schroeder, 28, who was arraigned May 8 on charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, and burglary of a habitation with intent to commit aggravated robbery, in connection with a March 15 incident in Floresville. He is set to return to court June 11 for a pretrial hearing, followed by a July 17 docket call, with jury selection set for Aug. 27.
