ON-CALL CRISIS POOL WORKERS NEEDED. Part-time positions are available for after hours “on-call” crisis workers to respond to mental health crisis for Wilson and Karnes Counties. Duties include crisis interventions, assessments, referrals to stabilization services, and referrals for involuntary treatment services according to the Texas Mental Health Laws. You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, etc. On-call hours are from 5 p.m.-8 a.m. weekdays, weekends and holidays vary. If selected, you must attend required training and must be able to report to designated safe sites within 1 hour of request for assessment. Maria A. Leija, 82, of La Vernia, Texas, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012. She was born Sept. 29, 1929, in Villa Union Coahuila, Mexico, the daughter of Iziqio Arellano and Romanita Alvizo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Miguel Leija Sr.; and her daughters, Maria Juarez and Ramona Mendoza.

Maria is survived by her children, Raymundo Leija and wife Graciela, Jose Leija and wife Dora, Miguel Leija Jr. and wife Maggie, Juan Leija and wife Clarita, Armando Leija and wife Leonor, Paulina Mata and husband Juan, Nestora Guevara and husband Felipe, Juanita Castaneda and husband Pablo, Enedelia Flores and husband Lorenzo, Isela Salas, and Marisela Castellanos and husband Onesimo. She is also survived by her sisters, Jesusita and Epifania; her brothers, Jesus and Guadalupe; 47 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; six great-great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.

Visitation was held Wednesday, May 16, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. in the St. Ann Catholic Church in La Vernia, with Father Stanislaw Fiuk officiating.

Interment followed in the Sutherland Springs Cemetery near La Vernia.
