Texas cattleman Paul Looney has completed the oath of office and extensive orientation to kick off his three-year term on the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, which oversees administration of the national Beef Check-off Program, according to a Cattlemen’s Beef Board press release.

After being nominated by fellow producers in Texas and appointed to the board by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Looney took the oath of office on Feb. 2 and was officially seated to the board during the 2012 Cattle Industry Convention in Nashville on Feb. 4, becoming one of 103 producers and importers representing the U.S. beef industry in making recommendations about how to invest national beef check-off dollars.

During a two-day orientation session March 15-16 in Denver, Looney joined other new Beef Board members in learning about his volunteer check-off role during the next three years. That included education and discussion about board policies, procedures and responsibilities -- including work on check-off committees to prioritize strategies aimed at leveraging beef producers’ check-off dollars on the research, educational, and promotional efforts that they believe offer the biggest return on producers’ investments.

Looney is a lifelong cow-calf producer, and also raises seedstock for sale. He was nominated to the Beef Board by the Independent Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) of Texas and also has been active as a local director of the Texas Farm Bureau, an executive committee member of ICA-Texas, and a member of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
