Ask any young cowboy or cowgirl who their idol is, and the answer may range from Ty Murray, seven-time world champion all-around, to Kay Blandford, world champion barrel racer. Several area students are pursuing their own rodeo dreams, by advancing to the state finals that start May 27 in Gonzales.

Junior high school boys

The Texas Junior High Rodeo state finals are set for Sunday, May 27, through Saturday, June 2, in Gonzales. The top 10 in each event will compete for state titles.

In the Wrangler Boys Region 6 All Around, Rylan Tieken of Nixon is ranked No. 8. These young wranglers competed from September to March in 12 rodeos, accumulating points for the rankings to advance to the state finals.

Rylan, 13, the son of Charles and Robin Zella of Nixon and Gene Tieken of Gonzales, will compete in four events. A seventh-grader in the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District, Rylan ranked third in team roping, and fifth in chute dogging, ribbon roping, and boys breakaway. Last year, with Raegan Tieken, he ranked second in team roping.

In the Wrangler Boys Region 8, Cameron Crow of Floresville is ranked No. 8. These young wranglers competed from September through February in 10 rodeos.

Cameron, a seventh-grader at Floresville Middle School, ranked No. 4 and 5 in tiedown and boys goat tying, respectively. With partner Zoey Wiatrek of Floresville, he placed seventh in ribbon roping.

Junior high school girls

All-around leaders in Region 6 include Shaye Lynn Jessee of La Vernia, who is ranked No. 3, while La Vernia’s Ciara Jenschke and Floresville’s Annabeth Peeler are ranked No. 7 and 8, respectively.

Shaye Lynn, a seventh-grader at La Vernia Junior High School, earned a saddle for rookie of the year. She also earned other prizes, including a rope can for ranking second in girls breakaway, a headstall for placing third in ribbon roping, and belt buckles for placing third in goat tying, eighth in pole bending, and 10th in barrel racing.

Ciara, also a seventh-grader at La Vernia Junior High School, earned a saddle for placing first in pole bending for Region 6. She will also compete in barrel racing (fifth), girls goat tying (sixth), and girls breakaway (seventh); she earned buckles for each of these events.

Annabeth, the daughter of Jason and Marianna Peeler of Floresville, placed fourth in girls breakaway, seventh in girls goat tying, and eighth in ribbon roping. She also competed in pole bending and barrel racing.

All-around leaders in Region 8 include Floresville’s Zoey Wiatrek and Abby Slagle, who are ranked No. 9 and 10, respectively. Joining them is Lindsei Harvey of Seguin, who is ranked No. 13.

Zoey, a seventh-grader at Floresville Middle School, will compete in the same events as she did last year in state -- girls goat tying, breakaway, and ribbon roping. In the 2012 standings, Zoey ranks No. 9 and 10 in goat tying and breakaway, respectively. She also placed seventh in ribbon roping with teammate Cameron Crow of Floresville. Other placings include barrel racing, 16th; and pole bending, 18th.

Abby, an eighth-grader at Poth Junior High School, ranked No. 2 in girls goat tying and eighth in girls breakaway. She also will compete in team roping with her partner, Montana Cox of Odem. The duo ranked ninth in Region 8. Abby also placed 19th in pole bending. This is Abby’s third year as a state qualifier. Last year, she and her partner, Karson Kolacek of West, earning ninth place in the state finals in ribbon roping.

High school rodeo

After a week’s hiatus, the state high school rodeo finals will begin in Abilene on Sunday, June 10. These athletes competed in 12 rodeos from September to February to advance to the state finals.

Caleb Blandford of Stockdale has again returned to the Region 8 All Around by placing 13th and will compete in the state calf-roping for ranking third.

Ben Peeler, the son of Jason and Marianna Peeler of Floresville, placed 15th in the Region 6 Senior All Around and will compete in the boys cutting division for being ranked fourth.

Other area top placers include Stormi Crouch of Pleasanton, who ranked No. 9 in the Region 6 Girls Senior All Around. She placed second in barrel racing and competed in the goat tying and breakaway roping events.
