Consumers planning to upgrade air conditioners, replace a refrigerator or switch over to compact fluorescent lights will want to take advantage of the State’s ENERGY STAR® sales tax holiday this Memorial Day weekend. Aside from not paying sales tax on qualifying appliances, CPS Energy customers can double up on savings by also applying for rebates offered by the utility.

Beginning right after the clock strikes midnight, the three-day holiday lasts from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 28. Shoppers can purchase energy efficient ENERGY STAR® appliances along with these items and not pay the sales tax:

· air conditioners (under $6,000)
· refrigerators (under $2,000)
· ceiling fans
· clothes washers

· dishwashers
· dehumidifiers
· light bulbs (incandescent and fluorescent)

The tax-free holiday applies to Internet and catalog sales as well as layaway. Residential customers, real estate developers, homebuilders, and others are eligible with no limit on the purchase quantity. Visit the State’s website for rules.
CPS Energy is currently offering rebates for air conditioners and refrigerators. Customers who recycle their old refrigerator through CPS Energy also can qualify for an extra $65 rebate. All rebates appear as a credit on the customer’s utility bill.

By taking advantage of the tax-free weekend, shoppers can save money on products that improve energy efficiency and help lower energy bills as summer unofficially begins in South Texas with the Memorial holiday. CPS Energy is also offering other programs, products and rebates to help customer manage their energy use and unveiled its latest offering, the Home Manager system, as it launched an Energy Savers Challenge this week.
