Guadalupe “Lupe” Calderon Pena, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, entered eternal rest Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at 7:33 p.m. in the Regency Manor nursing home in Floresville, at the age of 105 years, 10 months, and 12 days. Lupe was born July 10, 1906, in Mexico, the daughter of Cenovio and Maria DeLaFuente Calderon.

Lupe was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, where she actively participated in the Guadalupana and Cursillista “De Colores” for many decades. She religiously read her Bible and said the rosary every night before bed. She also worked very hard on her education so she could attain her citizenship. Lupe enjoyed sewing and crocheting, and loved cooking tamales and menudo. She especially loved baking for the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Juan Pena; her daughter, Augustina Arredondo; her son, Manuel C. Pantoja; her grandson, Pedro Manuel Pantoja; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Lupe is survived by her brother, Rey Calderon of Crystal City; her daughter who Lupe raised from the age of 2, Jenny Owens of San Antonio; 16 grandchildren, Dolores Rodriguez, Maria Griego, Herminio Arredondo Jr., Maria F. Perez, Maria G. Canales, Mario Arredondo, Jose Luis Arredondo, Rosa Maria Cantu, Maria Augustina Trigo, Guadalupe Zertuche, Victor Pantoja, Manuela Pena, Margaret Arriola, Pauline Aguirre, Rosalinda Perez, and Jacob Eric Talamantez; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation was held Thursday, May 24, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, with Father Phillip Henning officiating.

Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville.

Serving as pallbearers were Mario Arredondo, Herminio Arredondo Jr., Paul Arriola, Daniel Pantoja, Jacob Talamantez, and Chris Pena.
