SAN ANTONIO -- After a long struggle in Floresville, the Team Morones Boxing Club closed its doors and moved to San Antonio. Since making the move a few years back, the club has flourished, and continues to find success along the way.

It has been a particularly good year for the gym in 2012. It began as three-time world champion Wilfredo Vasquez Sr. and his son, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr., came to the gym to train for a fight with Donito Donair. For Team Morones, it was the club’s first fight on HBO.

When the Golden Gloves competition rolled around, the gym was represented as five fighters went to the amateur event. Of the five in competition, three boxers returned home with division championships. Not a bad record by anyone’s account.

Back in March of 2009, the club set a South Texas Amateur Boxing Association record by hosting a total of 44 bouts during its event in Floresville. Four years later, on March 24, 2012, the club made another splash as Quinton Whitaker defeated reigning Texas Title champion “Amir” Salvador Roa in a unanimous decision. It was the first Texas Title for Morones.

Things are going great, but the club is looking forward. Team Morones will host a professional event Saturday, June 23, at the La Villita Maverick Plaza. Rick Morones Jr. has even been asked to train Hector Camacho Jr., the son of the six-time world champion Hector Camacho. Camacho Jr. will train at the gym from June 17-23.

Tickets for the event are available at the Team Morones Boxing Club located at 2108 Quintana Road in San Antonio.

For more information on the event or the Team Morones Boxing Club, call Rick Morones Sr. at 210-387-6859.
