Brittany Aikens signs with Howard College

Floresville senior Brittany Aikens signs her letter of intent May 22 to attend school and play basketball for Howard College in Big Spring. She is joined by her mother, Janice; her father, Derrick; and her brother, Austin.
FLORESVILLE -- Deciding which college to attend isn’t always an easy task. The decision on where to enroll this fall is often made even more difficult for athletes, as they must weigh the pros and cons of each offer they receive.
Floresville senior and guard for the Jaguar basketball team Brittany Aikens was faced with making a tough decision about which school she will attend this fall. In the end, she chose Howard College in Big Spring. She had offers from Prairie View A&M University and Albany State University in Georgia, but chose Howard in the hopes it will serve as a stepping stone to what she really wants -- attending school and playing basketball for the Air Force Academy.
“She chose not to settle. She chose to pursue her dream,” Jaguar Head Coach Greg McWilliams said during her signing party.
Aikens’ father is in the military, and she wants to follow in his footsteps. She isn’t sure what she will major in, but sees a career in the military as an appealing option for her future. She said she is considering studying architecture, and likes her math classes best.
As for the move to Howard College, and hopefully on to the Air Force Academy from there, Aikens said what she is looking forward to the most is being on her own.
“Freedom from parents,” she said quite plainly.
While she is looking forward to some additional individual freedoms, and to developing her skills further on the basketball court, Aikens knows she will miss the life she leaves behind in Floresville. She will miss the Jaguar basketball program, her coaches, and her teammates the most of all.
“They were all such a big part of my life,” she said.
The three-year letterman has a number of memorable moments in a Hoop Troop uniform, but said it is her senior year that will be most fondly remembered.
“It was the first year the entire team truly committed to making it to state,” she said. “Everyone was on the same page trying to get it done.”
The Jags came up short in reaching state, but Aikens took it well, and said she wasn’t as disappointed as she thought she might be.
“I know we had given it our all,” she said. “We can’t be disappointed with that.”
While Aikens ran point this past year for the Jags, she said that was out of necessity. She is more comfortable and better suited as a wing, and is excited to move out to that position at Howard College. Aikens has more than 1,100 career points at Floresville, and had a strong senior season, despite the position change. Aikens averaged 15.4 points, 7.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.9 steals per game during her senior year. With numbers like that, it is no wonder the coaching staff at Howard College is excited Aikens is headed their way.
