Poth senior medals at state
Poth High School Journalism Coach Lisa Theuret and Cody Soto congratulate Heather Meyer (center) on her fifth-place win in UIL state headline writing competition.
Poth High School senior Heather Meyer traveled to Austin May 21 to compete in the 102nd annual UIL Academic State Meet. She placed fifth in the headline-writing contest and received a medal at an awards ceremony that evening.
“I am in the top 0.058 percent just by making it to state. That’s amazing,” Meyer said.
Three students from each of the four regions advanced to the state meet. Meyer and poetry state alternate Cody Soto spent the day at the University of Texas watching other events and anxiously awaiting the results of the headline contest. Soto was inspired to return to Austin in 2013.
“I want to go to state next year in poetry and feature writing,” Soto said.
The students ate lunch at Noodles next to the campus and saw a movie in the afternoon. The whole day was a taste of what college life would be like on a big campus.
“It just hit me that this is it,” Meyer said. “High school is over, and now I’m on to the next chapter. But I am ready.”
This was the journalism coach’s first time with a contestant at the state meet.
“I am so proud of all that Heather has accomplished,” Lisa Theuret said. “She has worked hard to earn this.”
State alternate in number sense Seth Dunn also attended the meet with his parents and used the opportunity to tour the college.
