San Fernando Cathedral to present relics of the 6 Mexican Martyrs for veneration.

Those worshiping at San Fernando Cathedral this weekend, June 2 and 3, will have the special opportunity to venerate the relics of six priest-martyrs who gave their lives during the persecution of Catholics in the early 20th century in Mexico. This past Wednesday, at a news conference held in the sanctuary of San Fernando Cathedral, Archbishop Gustavo Garc’a-Siller welcomed the ornate cross holding the relics from Mr. Andrew Walther, vice president of Communication and Media for the Knights of Columbus.

These relics will be presented for veneration by the faithful between the Masses at San FernandoCathedral;

Saturday, at 5:30 p.m.;
Sunday, at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

According to Catholic tradition, relics of saints are honored, not worshiped. They are venerated because they were once a part of the body of a saint who is considered a holy model of the faith.

The six priests were among 25 Mexican martyrs who gave their lives during this tumultuous time. In the year 2000, Pope John Paul II declared them saints of the Catholic Church. These “Knights of Columbus Holy Martyrs” include: Father Luis Bátis Sáinz, Father José Maria Robles Hurtaldo, and Father Mateo Correa Magallanes, Father Miguel de la Mora de la Mora, Father Rodrigo Aguilar Alemán, and Father Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero. The martyrdom of one of the priests whose relics will be at the Cathedral, Father José Maria Robles Hurtado, is depicted in the film, For Greater Glory, premiering this weekend.

Thousands of the faithful turned out for a previous pilgrimage of these relics in 2005 in cities around the United States, from Dallas to Philadelphia to Los Angeles. This year, the relics have been greeted with great interest in Houston, Chicago, Tucson, Phoenix, New York, Los Angeles, and now San Antonio.
