LA VERNIA -- The Wilson County Community Values Association has welcomed a continuance granted to it by the Texas Railroad Commission.

The association, based in the La Vernia area, opposes a proposed saltwater disposal well near F.M. 539 operated by Geomeg Energy Holdings LLC, based in Dripping Springs. The association’s attorneys presented information to the commission, advising Geomeg has been cited by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for operating an adjacent well without an air authorization permit.

Geomeg has applied for the existing well site to dispose of up to 15,000 barrels per day of waste from hydraulic fracturing -- “fracking” -- the method of extracting oil and natural gas from deep in the Eagle Ford shale. Citizens from Wilson County and surrounding communities gathered to hear information from the Wilson County Community Values Association about the proposed well April 25 in La Vernia.

“We just keep gathering information from similar issues around the country,” said Bill Osborne, a member of the association. “The well’s site near a water source -- the Carrizo Aquifer and the Cibolo, are a concern.”

Osborne said a recent study indicated springs feed into the Cibolo Creek near the proposed well site, and that the San Antonio River Authority has advised the Railroad Commission of these findings.

The Texas Railroad Commission will hold another hearing Friday, July 6, to hear from Geomeg, the Wilson County Community Values Association, and others regarding the application for the disposal well, Osborne said.

Meanwhile, he advised, the association will host another “town-hall-style” meeting about the well on Friday, June 22, at 7 p.m. in the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Hall.

For more information on the association, visit www.wccvatx.org or call association Chairman Todd Budde at 210-336-5379 or Osborne at 830-217-4011 or 210-260-6884.
