Morales, Bratten to face each other in runoff
Republicans living in Wilson County’s Precinct 3 will be returning to the polls July 31 to vote in a runoff election after none of the six candidates in the precinct’s commissioner race obtained 50 percent of the vote in the May 29 primary election. The results of the primary remain unofficial until canvassed.
The leading candidate was Ricky Morales, who has held the position since Feb. 22, 2011, when he was appointed to replace former Commissioner Bobby Lynn one week after Lynn’s death. Morales, who was the frontrunner in early voting, came away from the contest with a total of 431 votes. In second place was newcomer Larry Bratten, who received a total of 284 votes. Rounding out the field were Randall Paul Richter with 202 votes, Brian Wayne Stroud with 196 votes, Kip Workman with 165 votes, and Bobby Richter with 151 votes. No Democrats filed to run.
Runoffs also will be necessary in the races listed on the chart above.
No Democrats filed to run in the race for Precinct 3 constable. Incumbent Republican George Scoggins received 826 votes, winning handily over challenger Paula Thompson, who received 499 votes.
Incumbent constables in Precincts 1 and 4 -- Democrat Martin Rodriguez and Republican Galen Jansky, respectively -- had no competition from within their parties. No candidates have filed to oppose them in November. But there will be a general election race in Precinct 2, where Republican Chad Clark will attempt to unseat incumbent Democrat Donald J. Stevens.
Also headed for a November faceoff are incumbent Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. and Republican challenger Chris Burchell. Tackitt, who first took office in 1993, is seeking election to his sixth, four-year term. If re-elected, he would become the longest- serving sheriff in the county’s history.
