John K. “Jack” Spruce, 89, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Jack was born in Floresville, Texas, on Dec. 26, 1922, to John Webster and Ruth Kennedy Spruce.

He enrolled at Texas A&M College as a member of the class of 1944. With one semester left before graduation, his entire senior class was called to active duty. While stationed at Fort Belvoir in 1943, he met and married Maurine Cason. Jack served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army for a bridge company in Europe during World War II. He returned home in 1946 to finish his studies at A&M and received his BS degree in mechanical engineering. Jack joined City Public Service Board in 1947 and retired in 1987, after serving his last 12 years as general manager. In 1992, CPS Energy named its newest coal-fired electric generating station in his honor and later added another unit named “Spruce 2.” Jack was a registered professional engineer and was named Engineer of the Year by the Bexar County Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He served as president of the American Public Power Association, was active in the Bexar Kiwanis Club, and was a member of the Albert Pike Masonic Lodge. He served in the Texas National Guard and retired with the rank of major after 20 years of service. Jack loved Texas A&M University and supported a number of A&M organizations. Jack was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and hunting, and time spent at Lake LBJ. Jack was proud of all the CPS employees and enjoyed his time spent with them. He thought of them as family and remained active in the retiree club.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Maurine Cason; and their son, Jack Cason Spruce.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Spruce Korbell and husband Charles; his daughter-in-law, Sue Denison Spruce; and his six beloved grandchildren, Carolyn Spruce Hoffmann, Jyl Spruce Harrington, Jacque Spruce Pfeiffer, Allison Korbell Aderholt, Brian Charles Korbell, and Jennifer Korbell Charbonneau; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday, May 31, from 6-8 p.m. in the Porter Loring Mortuary in San Antonio.

A memorial service was held on Friday in the St. Francis Episcopal Church in San Antonio.

An interment was private for the family.

Memorials may be made to the Floresville Academic Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 281, Floresville, TX 78114, or the San Antonio A&M Club Scholarship Fund, 6205 West Ave., San Antonio, TX 78213.
