Jessica Castro signs with Texas Wesleyan University
Jessica Castro signs her letter of intent to Texas Wesleyan University. She is joined by her parents, Yvonne and Joe, as well as Lady Rams Head Coach Christy Clawson.
FLORESVILLE -- It was a good year for athletes from Floresville, as several signed on to compete for various colleges and universities across the country. Floresville graduate Jessica Castro recently added her name to that list, as she signed on to play volleyball for the Lady Rams of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.
There were a number of schools on Castro’s list of considerations, including Our Lady of the Lake University and Texas A&M-Kingsville, but she ultimately decided on Texas Wesleyan following her volleyball tryout experience.
“We all just connected somehow,” Castro said. “I had a good experience at tryouts. It’s a good program, too.”
Castro said she felt an instant connection to Coach Christy Clawson and all of the girls at Texas Wesleyan.
“It just felt really comfortable,” she said.
Math may be Castro’s favorite subject in high school, but the recent grad plans to major in education, and wants to teach history. She also wants to coach volleyball. She is excited about meeting new people, and about becoming part of the Lady Ram volleyball program. She is looking forward to experiencing life as a college student, and has her calendar marked for Aug. 4, when she will leave for two-a-days.
Although Castro primarily played outside hitter for the Jaguars, she will move to the back row and see court time as a defensive specialist (DS) and libero.
“I am comfortable there,” she said. “It’s actually my favorite position.”
Castro knows life in Fort Worth will be more difficult and that she will face more challenges. She understands school will be harder, and she knows she will miss her family.
Change is nothing new to Castro, though, and the grad went through several big changes as a member of the Jaguar volleyball team. She said it was a “big struggle” at times, but that Coach Reagan Curran really brought the team together, and took Floresville further than it had been in years. The multi-sport athlete gave up softball and basketball during her high school career, and shifted all of her focus and efforts to volleyball.
“I knew I wanted to pursue volleyball in college, so I stopped playing everything else,” she said.
At least one person who was happy with that decision is Castro’s mother, Yvonne. She expressed how proud she is of her daughter, and was excited to see her go after something she wanted and make it happen.
“I thought it was awesome,” Yvonne said of Castro’s tryout at Texas Wesleyan. “She played outside hitter in high school, but did get some experience at other positions in the playoffs. She tried out at DS, and even though she didn’t really play that, she made the team at that position.”
At 5 feet, 5 inches, Castro felt she was too short to play outside hitter in college, and knew she would be a better fit on the back row. It seems she was right.
Yvonne said she was a bit hesitant to have Castro move five hours away, but “got peace of mind” after seeing the school and meeting the coaches.
“I like that it is a smaller school,” Yvonne said. “It is a good choice that fits her. I’m just very excited and very proud of her.”
