1928-2012

Judge Billie B. “B.B.” Schraub, 84, of Seguin, Texas, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012. Billie was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Seguin, the son of Philip and Millie Knetsch Schraub.

He proudly served two tours in the U.S. Marine Corps including time in the Korean Conflict. He married Estella Jackson on Dec. 25, 1952. He graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1954.

Billie began his law practice in Seguin as a partner in the firm of Knetsch and Schraub. In 1961, he began serving as Seguin’s municipal court judge in 1961, and was Guadalupe County’s first county court-at-law judge, serving in that post from 1967-69. He was county judge from 1969-71. He was district attorney before becoming judge of the 25th Judicial District in 1971. He was on the district court bench until 1991 when he accepted the appointment as regional presiding judge. In January 2010, he retired after serving for two decades as presiding judge of the 26-county Third Administrative Judicial Region. He was instrumental in the Texas Center for the Judiciary here in the state and was executive director for two years.

Billie served as president of the United Way, president of Friends of the Library, and vice president of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. He served terms on the city’s Planning Commission and the board of the Seguin Housing Authority. He was appointed in 1997 to the board of managers of the hospital jointly owned by the city and county that became Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and later was elected chairman of the board of managers.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Estella Jackson Schraub; his parents; and his brothers, Philip and Vernon Schraub.

Survivors include his son, Fred Schraub; his sisters-in-law, Faye Talley and Lillian Jackson; his brother-in-law, Richard Jackson and wife Jackie; his nieces and nephews, Phyllis Childress, Georgnell “Porgy” Wimberly and husband Paul, Don Schraub and wife Rhonda, Sarah Ramos and husband Manuel, Terri Hinson and husband Bert, Dickie Jackson and wife Valerie, Beth Hope and husband Dale, and Stanley Malone and wife Shirley; numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins; and other loving family members, a host of friends, and a grateful community.

The family would like to thank the skilled nursing staff at The Forum at Lincoln Heights and the nursing staff of VITAS Hospice.

A memorial service celebrating Judge Schraub’s life will be held Monday, June 18, at 3 p.m. in the Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, with the Rev. Paul M. Cross officiating. A reception will follow in the Life Enrichment Center.
