NIXON -- The Nixon-Smiley Mustang basketball team made a good run during the 2011-12 season. The Mustangs finished the year with an overall record of 26-6, and were bounced from the playoffs by Cole -- the eventual Region IV champs. One player who helped Nixon-Smiley to its best finish in years was Robbie Mejia, and now the recent graduate will make a move to Victoria, where he will play guard for the Pirates of Victoria College.

Mejia is a gifted athlete who not only earned four varsity letters in basketball, but also competed as a member of the Mustang football and cross-country teams. He will only play basketball in college, though, and will continue to hone his skills while playing as a shooting guard in college.

When it came time to select a college for next year, Mejia was unsure where he would end up. He knew he wanted to continue playing basketball, and had planned to attend several tryouts at various schools. When the offer came in to Victoria College, though, he made a visit, liked the school, and decided it was the right place for him to be.

Mejia is planning to major in kinesiology, and has aspirations of being a basketball coach. He said he is open to other opportunities that come his way, though, and isn’t stuck on just doing one thing.

Aside from athletics and lunch, which were his favorite classes, Mejia enjoyed English at Nixon-Smiley. He said science wasn’t very high on his list, but that he enjoyed his time at Nixon-Smiley High School.

During his time in a Mustang uniform, Mejia made a number of fond memories. None was more memorable, though, than his senior season.

“Playing so well and going deep into the playoffs -- It’s going to be something I will never forget,” he said. “We all worked so hard to make it happen.”

According to Mejia, success came this season because of the change in the team’s attitude.

“We knew what to do, and we decided to do it,” he said. “We all decided to buckle down and do things the right way. Success came with it.”

He plans to build upon the success he found at Nixon-Smiley, and Mejia is looking forward to playing at a higher level.

“It’s going to be a good experience,” he said. “I know I am going to enjoy it.”

Mejia is in the middle of a six-child family, and said he will miss everyone when he moves to Victoria.

“They are always with me,” he said. “They have a huge part in what I do. My parents coached me in Spurs League, and it went on from there. They definitely helped me get to what I am right now.”

Mejia is in a good place right now. He is enjoying some time with his younger siblings this summer, and is still making the time to get to the gym and play basketball.

“I am still playing nearly every day,” he said. “Coach Mac has been opening the gym, and I am either there or with some friends. I love the game.”
