FLORESVILLE -- Earlier in the school year, two of Floresville’s three senior softball players signed on to compete at the college level. Just before graduation, Lauren Cook joined in by signing with Cisco College, making the Jaguars three for three in signing their 2012 senior class.

For those unfamiliar with the city of Cisco, the town lies in the northern part of the state, just east of Abilene. The city was born in the late 1800s when two railroads crossed each other. It was the only railroad intersection west of Fort Worth, and it didn’t take long for the town to grow.

Cisco is also the town where Conrad Hilton launched his hotel empire in 1919. Cisco was the birthplace of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, and Cook and her family hope it will be the beginning of something big for her, too. Cook said she is excited about playing softball for the Wranglers, and is especially looking forward to earning her degree in biology, and then pursuing her plans to be an orthopedic physician’s assistant.

“I’ve always been interested in the medical field,” Cook said. “My mom is a nurse. I have always enjoyed helping people and being around others.”

Cook said her favorite subject was science, and that’s good news for someone wanting to enter the medical field. Cook said she didn’t really pursue opportunities at any other schools, and feels Cisco is a good fit for her.

Cook played at second base and in the outfield for the Jags, and that’s likely where she will see time for the Wranglers. Cisco College is coming off a disappointing 18-40 season, and the entire team will have a lot of work to do next season. Cook is hoping she can help the team turn things around.

In addition to playing at the collegiate level, Cook is also looking forward to meeting new people and being on her own.

“I’m looking forward to doing my own thing,” she said. “It’s scary, but exciting.”

Cook said her parents, Dane and Darla, are glad that she achieved her goal of playing college softball, but are sad that she won’t be nearby. She admits she will miss her family, and comes from a household of eight. All of her brothers and sisters play baseball and softball,

“It is going to be tough,” Cook said. “I am close to my family, and I know I am going to miss them all.”

For Cook, she knows leaving her teammates at Floresville will also be difficult. She said her senior season would always be the most memorable for her, as she knows how hard everyone worked.

“We were so close so many times,” she said. “We fell short, but we fought so hard. We wanted it and just couldn’t actually get the win, but we were always fighting.”

Jaguar Head Coach Billy “Doc” Marshall felt the same about his team, and had nothing but good things to say about Cook and the efforts she gave this year.

“Lauren played anywhere we asked of her and was never satisfied with her performance,” he said. “Lauren is the type of player who always asks questions to better herself. She matured a great deal this past year.”

Life is about to change for Cook, but if she continues to work as hard in Cisco as she did at Floresville High School, she will undoubtedly find success.
